Despite being a Star Trek fan, I don't really go to many Trekkie websites. As a result, Star Trek: Of Gods and Men completely evaded my radar.

It stars Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Alan Ruck, Tim Russ, and many more Trek alumni. This is more than another fan film.

Watch it here.

Yeah, sometimes those internet Star Trek fan shows are really hit and miss. This one is a hit.

It really is a strange case. Technically, they can't sell it, but numerous writers, producers, and talent of Star Trek were heavily involved in its production. Because it was a professional gig by people with more merit than Sandy Collora, is it still a fan film or something else?

Another one that is quite good is New Voyages. It also featured several Star Trek alumni, including George Takei, Walter Koenig and Denise Crosby. The latest episode was even nominated for a Hugo Award. (And the actor who played Spock in New Voyages plays the Vulcan Helmsman in Of Gods and Men by the way).

One fan project that's a miss in my opinion is Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning. It's a parody but unlike Galaxy Quest it completely fails at making fun of the genre conventions in science-fiction in general or Star Trek in particular. There were some funny bits about B5 in there, but apart from that the whole story was nothing but an excuse to show battles between ships from Star Trek and Babylon 5. Which, I have to admit, were beautifully done, but not enough to save the movie. Maybe you have to be Finnish to get it.

Of Gods and Men however is great. I loved that it was a real tribute to the actors and how it incorporated past Trek continuity. I really think it should be considered canon, if it isn't.
