My feeling is that by current standards they would be considered Hard Rock, however back in their day and age, they were very much Heavy Metal.

Also, Led Zeppelin arrived before Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple was right about the same time as them.

I believe it was Tony Iommi himself who said that BS was never a metal band but simply a hard rock band. He acknowledged that they did in fact have much influence on artists who would end up becoming metal musicians, but the metal genre really didn't exist then. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, and Iron Butterfly (sadly, they rarely get credit) also were huge innovators in this musical movement, but they technically weren't metal bands either.

Does that make sense? I'd hate if my post is confusing in any way.

Zep, Purple and Iron Butterfly definitely weren't metal, and I see your case now, but I dunno, Sabbath just did too much to influence metal to not be considered metal.

Well let's talley em up on the good ol' 'Checklist a la Metal from hell' shall we?
Doom-ey, HEAVY riffage? Check.
Satanic/controversial lyrics? Check.
Major influence for EVERYthing that IS and ever WILL be metal? Check.
Solos? Triple-check.
Was Ozzy Osbourne ever in the band? Check.
Elaborately evil and dark atmosphere in terms of stage show? Check.

Yes folks, I believe what we have here is a good old fashioned Heavy Metal band, I reckon, yepyep! Smile

Sabbath were heavy, but Priest were metal.

Sabbath are indeed metal, but I would have went with Iron Maiden on this.
