While it's pretty obvious that rock peaked a long time ago, I'd be curious to hear the Syd Lexia Forum's thoughts on rock bands today that are keeping it real. By "newer", I generally mean "became famous after the grunge era."
Bands I really like: Foo Fighters, System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, Offspring (though I was sorely disappointed with the new album), Clutch, and on the punk side Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly
Bands I'm getting in to: Eagles of Death Metal, Buckcherry, The Killers, Tenacious D, Coheed and Cambria, Black Stone Cherry (saw 'em in '06 with Black Label Society, liked 'em, but I've never bought an album), Priestess (see parentheses for Black Stone Cherry), The Audition (saw 'em at my campus, they were OK, vocals a bit on the whiny side)
Bands I need to check out: The Mars Volta
I should note that the Offspring barely make the cut, as they'd been around in the mid-80's, but I'm basing their inclusion on the fact that they didn't make it big until '94's "Smash". But I'm sure Val would know more about that than I would.Wink
So, what are your favorite rock bands of the modern era? Also, feel free to recommend me bands, albums, etc (unless its anything by Radiohead and/or Smashing Pumpkins. Can't stand either.)
Sorry if this has been done before, I couldn't find anything using the search function.

First off, I'd like to go ahead and state that TMV fucking rule, I saw them live twice. Check out the "De Loused in the Comatorium" album, it pretty much sums up their style in that one.
Other bands I like though are...
Alexisonfire, At the Drive In (Singer and guitarist of Mars Volta's previous band.. kinda emo sound but whatever), Death from Above 1979, Monster Magnet, Rammstein, Chili Peppers (Frusciantes solo albums are pretty dece as well), Rise Against, Scars on Broadway (Daron.. Malakoksodnms from SOAD's side project), Valient Thorr... To name a few.

I don't have a signature. Sorry. Try again later.. probably not though.

I dig what I've heard from ATDI and Rise Against, and I'd like to state that I'm a huge fan of the Chili Peppers. The reason I didn't include them is because they were pretty big when Mother's Milk came out, and even more so in '91 with Blood Sugar Sex Magik (probably the best rock album of the 90's, along with Foo Fighters "There is Nothing Left to Lose", in my opinion.), hence not fitting into the "post-grunge" timeline I originally specified.

I'll hit you with the Canadian content as you might not be as familiar with it. Billy Talent is relatively new and awesome. Tea Party is older, but still post-grunge methinks. You could try checking out Sum 41's 'Half Hour of Power' album, you may not like Sum 41, but give it a listen anyway, particularly 'Grab the Devil by the horns and fuck him up the ass'. Um, my friend plays in a band called Magnus Rising and they're opening Iced Earth on Nov 19th if that means anything to you. Then there's stuff like Sloan, The Trews, and Matt Mays and El Torpedo, but they're more light rock. You could also try The Villains, but I've only heard the one song by them (From the River), so I don't know how easy they'll be to track down.

Not exactly famous yet, but I have been enjoying The Airborne Toxic Event. Although their lyrics stem from an emo place, they still manage to sound amazing. There better stuff includes Moving On, Sometime Around Midnight, and Gasoline.

I know Against Me has been mentioned here before, but they deserve another mention. They are a very good band, and Thrash Unreal is awesome.

Apocalyptica is surprisingly good for a band made up of four Chellos and a drummer, and I'm Not Jesus makes me wonder why Corey Taylor is still apart of Slipknot. The man has a voice, but it is being held back by the crappy playing and screaming.

Although it is disputable if they are rock or another genre, I must show my support for Mindless Self Indulgence. They are just made up of awesome, although in order to enjoy them you will have to taken everything they say with a grain of salt.

The Trews and Sloan are both good AC/DC-type riff bands. Billy Talent and Alexisonfire are pretty wicked. I love Rise Against. If it counts, Sixx:A.M. is amazing. I like Tokyo Police Club, but they're more indie/pop/punk/rock. Against Me is great. I love Buckcherry. I love Switchfoot times 100. I dunno, in terms of my music tastes, all the harder stuff I listen to is pre-grunge (or at least by pre-grunge bands) and a lot of the mellower, indie-type stuff is post-grunge.

Some bands/groups I've gotten into the last 2 years, and I'll even provide links to videos/music if I can find them:

Between the Buried and Me - An awesome prog metal band. I just saw some videos last night of their tours for their latest album, "Colors," and they are tight as hell live too. Very impressive. It's hard to get a grasp of their talents from only a few songs, but if you think you like them, definitely check out more; Though they're primarily metal, they do have injections of other styles once in a while.

Sun of Nothing (Colors)
Viridian (Colors, sweet gentle bass solo piece)

--

Justice - This is sweet electronic music with a solid beat, great chord progessions, and classic synth sounds. Super dancey shit. And to boot, they're French (which I just learned), so who says the French never did anything good?...

Planisphere Part 1
Planisphere Part 2
Planisphere Part 3
Planisphere Final

--

Battles - Mostly instrumental math rock, and when they do have vocals they're... different., but super creative and tasty as fuck. Some talented motherfuckers right here. They have some sweet videos, too.

DDiamondd (Mirrored) - ((Sweet lyrics to Ddiamondd))
Tonto (Mirrored, awesome video)

--

Don Caballero - Sort of in the same category as Battles, but they definitely bring their own flavor. Again, this is some tasty, tasty shit. I loved listening to this while playing Skate.

Palm Trees in the Fecking Bahamas (live) (World Class Listening Problem)
You Drink a Lot of Coffee For a Teenager (American Don) (fan video)

--

Dethklok - Essentially the bands that made me realize that death metal can have a purpose... or rather, a melody. This is great shit and Brendon Small has always had a flair for making great music and great cartoons.

I'm sure everyone's heard of Dethklok and their music. If not, they're not hard to find.

--

Clutch - I never thought basic rock in a minor pentatonic could sound so good, but these guys are solid. Nothing too technical, but they have great riffs, great lyrics, and a killer vocal sound.

Profits of Doom (Blast Tyrant)
The Rapture of Riddley Walker (From Beale Street to Oblivion)

--

Gnarls Barkley - Most people have heard of Gnarles now, but he's still in the top tier for newer stuff I've been listening to. He is everything Motown wishes it could be nowadays. A master vocalist.

Like Dethklok, definitely much more well known, so if you haven't heard it, it won't be too hard to find.

--

Ghostland Observatory - Another band that's sort of difficult to classify. It's just two dudes, one sings and plays guitar, and the other plays drums/synthesizer. They're also a bit dancey, but they have a unique sound and the vocals sometimes give me strong Freddy Mercury flashbacks, especially when he's singing more boldly.

Heavy Heart (live) (Robotique Majestique)
Midnight Voyage (Paparazzi Lightning)

Haha, Dethklok was the band that got me into Death Metal. Now, it's my third favorite genre after thrash and classic. I tried to leave off newer metal bands, because the title of this thread is "newer ROCK bands", after all. But if we're going for metal, Mastodon and Skeletonwitch all the way. I'd also like to elaborate on Clutch's awesomeness. In a time in which I was bombarded with emo and screamo, Clutch was a band that restored my faith in rock. May Lemmy bless you, Clutch.
And I will admit that I've been digging a lot of Green Day and blink-182 lately. It's good music for when you're feeling nostalgic about the middle school years.
EDIT: I just started checking out Mustach from Sweden, pretty good rock. Here's a vid for one of their songs (I really like the intro and the solo): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0k_w4nYXlRE

Oh yea... newer ROCK bands. I didn't quite catch that, but when thinking about it, rock has basically branched into a lot of the genres we hear today, so I think it's okay. I just got excited when I made that post. I don't usually like to tout my musical tastes too much, as anyone who was in the chatroom one time will tell you, because I am overly honest about what I think of music that's presented to me... but I felt compelled to offer my thoughts on some of the bands I've been getting into within the last two years that have greatly altered my view of enjoyable and creative music. It took me about 30 minutes to get all the links together, but I feel if you're excited about a band and telling people, then provide links right there, so they don't have to dig around at first for something they may thoroughly enjoy. As anyone who is deep into music knows, once you get a taste of something you like, you'll dig as deep as you can to find out everything that group did... or this is how I and the people I know are anyway.

^_^

I've been just recently getting into Silversun Pickups and Yeah Yeah Yeahs ("Fever to Tell" is one of the most blatantly kickass albums I've ever heard).

Right now, I think Dillinger Four is the best punk band in the world. They have awesome lyrics, and every song is just powerful and fun to listen to. I got an early (legal) release of their newest album, and I do believe it's the best rock album I've heard all year.

I've been getting into Wolfmother lately, and they're a really good blues/metal rock band. If you like Uriah Heep or Led Zeppelin, they're worth a shot.

If you like any combination of indie/ska/punk, then Bomb the Music Industry! is worth a try. Each song contains a lot of energy and musical talent, and the best part is that they release all of their albums for free on their website.

There are plenty of awesome bands,

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

Best album of the year? That's saying a lot, considering we got new Motorhead, AC/DC, Alice Cooper, probably Lenny Kravitz's best album, Metallica, Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and eventually Guns N' Roses...interesting. Maybe I'll check 'em out.

I'm curious if anybody like the new Blind Melon with Travis Warren as their frontman.

I'm a huge Blind Melon fan. I think I like their new stuff. I'm just not sure how much. Sometimes I think I really like it, then sometimes its just okay. I have to admit I've only heard a couple of songs. They still sound like Blind Melon. Shannon Hoon had such a unique voice that its nearly impossible to replace. But Warren is similar enough (on what I've heard) that it still sounds like Blind Melon. But its obviously different enough as well.

I'm quite a big fan of Reel Big Fish, Less Than Jake and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. Then again, I'm one of THOSE people who thinks Ska isn't dead.

Are the Mighty Mighty Bosstones still around?! I was talking about them the other day and how I've never heard anything other than the Knock on Wood song. I liked their feel, same with Reel Big Fish. Honestly, I can't listen to it a lot, because it'll get old probably, but it's still good stuff. Brass (and saxophonic woodwinds) is just plain classy.

Yeah, the Bosstones are back, and they're getting as good as they were back in the 90's. Ska altogether is getting a hell of a lot better. It basically got huge in the late 90's, and became so radio friendly and poppy that it was just sickeningly sweet. Since then, there have been some great ska bands like Choking Victim, Streetlight Manifesto, Bomb the Music Industry!, and Rocket From the Crypt.

Yeah, Ross I said best, you wanna fight about it? This Is A Joke . You seem to have a taste in hard rock, so your preferences will give you your own opinion, which I think is okay, as I prefer punk. I listened to all but the Judas Priest album, and I either don't like some of the albums you mentioned or I didn't like their albums as much as D4's. I love the Dillinger Four because they actually add poetry to their songs, which is refreshing compared to the curtness of a lot of lyrics today. Songs like "Parishiltonisametaphor", "Fruity Pebbles", and "Classical Arrangement" from the new album use familiar song themes but with unique lyrics.

I recommend them for someone who's looking for a smart, yet listenable punk band. The new album's a little more timid, so if you're looking for a more powerful sound from them, try out the albums "Midwestern Songs from the Americas" or "Versus God."

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I hate how every band has to have their stereotypical sound definition attached to it. I think The Ramones were fucking rock and roll, shit even The Ramones said they were rock and roll. I'm not their biggest fan but anyway, that was just an example, and I realize I'm ranting.

My point is, a song doesn't have to be loud as hell and screaming, along with a boring solo like it all is today. I consider Wilco the most innovative rock band of the nineties and they are going now stronger than they ever were.

God, I love The Ramones. I'm really pissed that everybody rips on them today, and I want to do anything I can to shut them up.

I forgot about Mastodon! Great and talented motherfuckers. Ditto on Motorhead as well.

I was never big on the punk movement. There are songs here and there I don't mind, and I can appreciate the original movement (although it killed any hope for a stronger prog movement in the US v_v) for its intended message and purpose, but I can't get into it much. If I were more into lyrics, then possibly, but all I can hear is power chords and drums and I prefer music that I can chew on on a theoretical level for the most part.

I did like Holiday in Cambodia by the Dead Kennedys, but it definitely stands out from the rest of what I've heard. I haven't checked out any of their other stuff, but I wonder if they take the same approach with their other songs.
