The majority of music that I enjoy originally came out on records, tapes, and CDs.
These formats each have their perks, but in 2008 they fall into the category of physical media and aren't very useful when compared to digital music files.
I am getting geared up to archive my physical media into a digital format, but I am trying to be as smart as I can about it.
The purpose of this collection is three fold.
1. Physical media backup
2. Organized digital access to my media
3. Portable audio usage
I can hear the difference between lossless and lossy compression. So I am assuming that I must venture into the land of FLAC. Before I do that, does anyone have any suggestions?

If you're going the way of FLAC, I'd definitely suggest getting a portable music player with as much space as physically possible.
Also, if you're looking at other lossless file types, do NOT go with Windows Media Audio Lossless. I've found that most of the time if you rip the files from CDs, they make sporadic horrible screeching sounds. FLAC or WAV are probably your best bet (although you can't really input song information with WAV).

FLAC is great, but if digital space is low Ogg Vorbis is a good choice, not lossless but much less lossy than an mp3.

Apple's lossless file format is definitely advantageous because it allows me to consider an iPod or iPhone in the future.
It is also a fast well written codec.
I am nervous though because I have never really trusted the way that Apple has handled the music industry.

Jeeze, another slam at Apple. Anyways I'm not partial on whether it's lossless or not. Hell I only rip my cd's at 192Kbps, so I guess I'm not qualified to be a true audiophile. My biggest reason for not using lossless: space & peripherals. My mp3 player sure as hell won't play ogg or flac, so that's why I stick with the good ole mp3. Sure, it's outdated but it works. Plus, my largest hard drive is 200GB. Man, I'm so behind the technological times. But I like it that way.

I think that they make hardware that is purposefully designed to die after a short lifespan (1-2 years).
They try to get people to use iTunes but put in odd restrictions about how many computers you can switch to.
They created competing file formats instead of trying to establish a standard.

I would like to add that they gear there products towards people who have little or no understanding of technology, and emphasize appearance, design, and simplicity of use over functionality, customization, and control.

God, I hate fucking people like this that say Apple computers are for retards who don't know how to use a computer. Have you used an Apple extensively? If no, shut the fuck up. If yes, then you should know about OS X's UNIX core. Granted most people who use OSX know nothing about the console, so it rarely gets used. So think again before you say that Apples are for people who have little or no understanding of technology.
Edit: My bad, you said that they gear their products towards those kind of people. Still, I disagree. Most people I know with Apples are Graphic Comm or Graphic Design majors.

I have been all over a Mac, and I am not a fan. I had to use them all the time in college, and I am glad I do not now. Any system where I can drag the hard drive into the trash, empty said trash, and kill my computer, is not so good. I know you might say why would you do that, but I don't like that that option exists. Also, and I have seen this done both by accident and on purpose, if you turn all of the file extensions on, and restart the computer, bam it's dead. They are getting better in terms of being able to fix the hardware or add on to it if you have the servers or some of their systems, but most, other then software, when it's done it's done. You can't easily change a drive, or add memory, be it for storage or speed.

Lets get back on topic.
If you think that Apple Lossless is a good choice for archiving, then please explain why. Don't just expect me to accept that as a valid answer.

Sorry for getting all off topic there, in return I give a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_audio_codecs
There's quite a few lossless codecs availible, if it were my choice, I'd go with Vorbis, Shorten, FLAC, or WavPack. I'd probably lean towards Vorbis and FLAC, though.

Besides m4a, I also support FLAC, but purely because of the VLC support.

Arguing about BSD vs UNIX is like arguing about the color of oranges vs tangerines. The problem is that the rest of the world doesn't give a shit about those minor differences, they care about Apples vs Oranges... and that is why you should stop derailing my fucking thread.
