How are books internal? Because you actually have to use your imagination? TV shows and movies are on paper before they're on the screen so I negate your argument. All that's different is that it is translated through actors and shown on stage or film. It's just a different way of expressing the same thing.

TV forever.

Um... Tebor, buddy, what are you on? TV is about selling commercial time. Or product placement in TV shows. And selling candy to kids.

And 1-900 numbers.

1-900 numbers!? That's sooooooooooooooooooo 90s.

And Deadwood*, Entourage, Dexter, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and shit load of other shows I don't watch, but I bring up only because HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax are keeping it real.

Just kidding.

Look, as Stephen King says: TV giveth, TV taketh away. Now, he was referring to gore, but it also goes for stories. TV allows you to tell the longest stories possible in a visual, auditory, and imaginative medium. Books are only imaginative. Audio books are auditory and imaginative. Comic books are only visual. Movies cover all three, but are too short (or in the case of Tarkovsky Truffaut too long). If that comes at a cost of 20 minutes of ads I can TIVO past or mute, it's worth it. FUCK the man -- DVD forever.

Example: 24 season 5 - 1048 minutes. That's the running time. Beat that. Beat that with your "commercialism". And guess what? It's preserved on DVD after the initial premium cost of commercials when it airs FOR FREE. That's right, TV is FREE. If that comes at a cost of commercials -- Wait, fuck you. You misread my post.

What my original post said is that TV IS THE BEST MEDIUM for storytelling. It is corrupted by advertising and fuck you if that went over your head (and fuck me for not remembering what I meant until half way through responding).

Okay, congrats, I just fucking over explained the most SIMPLE post ever written.

What am I on? Obviously the truth.

Yes, smartass I know Deadwood is canceled.

Haha, I do know what you meant, I was just giving you a hard time.

TV just needs bigger budgets to do its thing. It's tough to watch them ALMOST get to movie quality only to be held back by stuff like cheap sets and not being able to show the baddie or futuristic city.

24 is a bad example though, because it sucks. BURN!

And yet more inspiring than The Wire and The Shield. I take solace in that.

And I think we all agree Sleeper Cell sucks.

I'm with Tebor, and I go one step further. With the invention of DVR, Television is the most wonderful medium for storytelling. At least with TV/DVR you can skip past the advertising, unlike in cinema when it's incorporated not so seamlessly into the movie, forcing the advertisement down your throat and distracting from the story.

Actually, the internet is the best medium because it's on demand and all inclusive.

Product placement in TV and movies sometimes gets nauseating. Back in the day the cans had to be placed in such a way so you couldn't see the brand name or altered somehow. For example, a pepsi can may have been altered to say popsi or something. Nowadays, it's too obvious and annoying, being too much like an advertisement.

You're talking about two totally different things. "Greeking" a product so that you can't see the brand name is the opposite of product placement. You do that so that you don't get sued for misusing another company's logo, trademark, etc. without permission.

With product placement, the companies PAY to have their products displayed prominently. And we can thank Steven Spielberg for starting that in E.T.

In Stanley Kubrick's much earlier film 2001: A Space Odyssey (and in Soviet Russia), the filmmakers paid the companies to use their brand names (PanAm, Bell Telephone) to add verisimilitude.

My favorite in show advertising was the aired version of "The Office" episode "The Merger" where Kevin was given documents to shred with his Staples paper shredder. He later made a salad with it.

Alas, these scenes were NOT included in the iTunes nor DVD versions of the episode. It might have been advertising, but they were damn funny.

My family is thinking about cancelling our cable service to save money and because we rarely watch TV. There are only like 3 shows that I would miss if we actually cancel it, so whatever. I agree with the OP. Fuck television!

Most television is online now, so I would support that decision.

Looking at the Oscar film potentials coming up later this year... TV is still better than anything else out there.
