So, which game had the better music?
I'm going with 2. The soundtrack to 2 was technically much less well composed than the soundtrack to 3, but it was both more expressive and more consistent. Some of the themes in 3 (Needle Man and Top Man for example) were just outright uninteresting, while 2 was excellent all the way through. Just compare the Skull Castle themes from both games and you'll see how much more dramatic and foreboding 2's was.
What I also like about the music in 2 is how each theme is so tailored to the environment. Like how the Air Man theme covers an entire three-octave range that culminates in a dive on the highest note, it gives to illusion of being very, very high up somewhere. Or how Metal Man's theme consists of three independant, highly syncopated melodies harmonizing, which perfectly illustrates a chaotic industrial setting.
Although "Protoman's Whistle Concert" does make me blow a load in my pants every single time.....

I think I prefer Mega Man 3's music to Mega Man 2's music, simply because I like the songs better (although my favorite MM song is from Dive Man's stage in MM4).
In my opinion, Mega Man 3's music just...had more going on (it's hard to explain). Plus, the music in Gemini Man, Hard Man, Needle Man, Shadow Man, and Spark Man's stages are some of my favorite MM tunes. All the games had good tunes except for maybe MM6 (which didn't have bad music, the music was just underwhelming in comparison to the other games).

One of the Skull Castle songs on MM3 reminds me of Rush's Hemispheres...
Seriously though, if Keji whats his name put out the MM2 soundtrack as an album it would have been album of the year, no question.
That said, Snake Man > anything on MM2

I think 3, although it is very close. The intro is unbelievable, as is Protoman's theme....let alone the various levels. I always liked the music on Hardman's stage.....and Snakeman.

This should be a poll.
I love Mega Man 2 music, however I can't download anything Mega Man without picking up Mega Man 3 tracks too.
Held at gun point, I pick 2.

What MM2 has that I like: Air Man, Bubble Man, Crash Man, Flash Man, Wily Stage 1-2.
What MM3 has that I like: Title Screen, Stage Select, Proto Man, Needle Man, Hard Man, Top Man, Snake Man, Spark Man, All three Wily stage themes, Wily Boss Theme.
MM3 hands down imo, but MM4 has Skull Man and Cossack 3-4 which are both among my favorite themes from Megaman.

I think MM3 has the best stage select music period.

My vote would go to Mega Man 2. Flashman's stage in particular.
I even came up with lyrics to it (like I did so many of the songs in the 8-bit era).

I hope I am not out of line for bumping this thread...

Here's how I'd rank the MM games in terms of best soundtrack, from best to least-best:
MM3
MM2
MM5
MM4
MM1
MM6
I said "least-best" instead of "worst" because I like all of the soundtracks, just some more than others.

From MM1 to MM6 (i said it) theres always atleast one song that owns.
Elec Man in MM1, Most of MM2 (the boss theme ess.), MM3 is awesome with memebrobly tones. It's really hard to make a list of top 10 MM songs because their so many and very few that are not cool. From 4-6, it does get bland though

What song in MM6 owns? I'm just wondering, cause I can think of at least three songs in MM 1-5 that are awesome, but not MM6.

tomahawk man's stage song is good. MM6 is where the series suffers music wise in my opinion. The songs are catchy when you play through the game but when your done you forget them pretty easily.

I dunno, I always thought Tomahawk's stage music was kind of generic and boring (like all of the music on Mega Man 6). I actually thought you were going to suggest Yamato Man's stage music, I don't particularly love that one either but if I had to pick one, that'd be my favorite song from MM6.
