#67: Adventure Island II

Released In: 1991
Developer: Hudson Soft
Publisher: Hudson Soft

Master Higgins returns! Once again, the Master must wield his trusty axe and skateboard against the forces evil. This time, nefarious aliens invaders have kidnapped his girlfriend. Also, they want to take over the world. With the help of four new dinosaur buddies and a steady diet of fruit, Master H will almost surely be victorious. Well, unless you suck at the game.

Syd Lexia: This game was developed at roughly the same time as Super Mario World, and the two games have a few things in common. In addition to being amazingly awesome platformers, both games feature the addition of dinosaur buddies for their protagonists to ride around on. I've always wondered if this was purely coincidental or if Adventure Island II, which was first released three months after Super Mario World debuted in Japan, ripped off Yoshi. Either way, Adventure Island II fucking rules.

Valdronius: Master Higgins is back in action in the sequel to the first Adventure Island. This time, however, he has more than just axes at his disposal. This game introduces the dinosaurs companions. If you crack open an egg and find a heart, spade, diamond, or club, you'll get one of four dinosaurs. One spits fire, another shoots stars from its tail, and the other two are for sea and air travel. If you make to the end of the level with a dinosaur or an axe, you can stockpile them and use them later if you want. This game is a great example of how to follow up a hit game, use the same engine, but add a few new things to make it distinct from the previous.
