Released In: 1988 In 1957, an evil alien overlord known as The Red Falcon crash landed in the Amazon basin. Now, thirty years later, he has just completed his army of alien soldiers and is almost ready to launch a massive assault on the world's government. It's up to two elite soldiers, Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer and Lance "Scorpion" Bean, to infiltrate The Red Falcon's facilities, defeat his armies, and destroy him before he can bring his plans to fruition. If they fail, Earth is lost. But with the help of a not-so-secret cheat code that gives them 30 lives per continue, it's quite unlikely that they'll fail. Syd Lexia: This was one of the absolute best two co-op player games for the NES, largely due to the cheat code. Unfortunately, it could also lead to vicious fights depending on your actual level of cooperation. Specifically, my neighbor and I would often fight over who got what weapon. It usually went something like this: greeneyedzeke: I have always sucked at Contra. Those damn 3D levels fuck me up in a monumental way. I completely agree that it’s an awesome game, but my favorite thing about it is the durability of its cheat code as an in-joke among gamers of any age. We could almost form a secret language based on its tireless usage. Example:
Dr. Jeebus: If you know the Konami code, then it's probably because of this game. Sometimes 30 lives per continue just doesn't seem like enough in Contra, but in the days of dial-up I would sit and play this game on NESticle while waiting for my mom to get off the damn phone so I could log online. Needless to say I don't need the code anymore. |
