Who thinks that the song 'Nazi Girlfriend' from Pop's 1999 album release "Avenue B" sounds like 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull?

Nevermind that, he's awesome. So heavy in the 60s and 70s!!

Never heard it, but I did get into him a few months back, and I stayed up to watch him on Jimmy Fallon the other night.

I never heard it, but I do know that "Dr. K" by Body Count sounds real similar to "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead in places.

Don't know much about Iggy, but would like to become educated. Where would be a good place to start listening?

The "A Million in Prizes: The Anthology" compilation is quite good. Most of his classic songs are on there, and some versions also include a bonus concert DVD.

I'm a huge fan of Iggy and The Stooges. Fun House and Raw Power are probably the best albums I've ever heard, and some of Iggy's solo stuff (the albums Lust For Life and The Idiot in particular, as well as his early 90s works Brick By Brick and American Caesar) is absolutely brilliant as well.

Thanks, but when trying to get into a new band I prefer to listen to normal studio albums rather than "greatest hits" albums. I feel that listening to GH albums encourages one to only focus on their popular songs, while listening to whole albums gives you a better sense of what the band was really about, their body of work and their progression.

Can you recommend a few of Iggy and the Stooges studio albums?

Okay, let's see.

The Stooges' self titled debut, Fun House and Raw Power are all fantastic (the debut isn't as good as the other albums, John Cale's production takes away quite a bit of the explosive sound... and half of the album was written the night before the recording sessions, but it's still a classic), you can't go wrong with those. Their 2007 comeback album The Weirdness is pretty bad, but there are still a couple of songs I enjoy.

Metallic K.O. should also be mentioned. It's a great live album, originally a bootleg recording of the last Stooges gig before their breakup in 1974, and features Iggy talking trash to the angry drunk bikers in the audience between songs, complete with sounds of thrown bottles smashing into guitars and amps, as well as a bunch of tracks that never made it to the main studio albums (there are quite a few of those, appearing on all sorts of compilations).

As for Iggy's solo work, it's pretty uneven and varies in quality a lot although there is at least one great song on every album, and most of it is completely different from the Stooges material. There are four totally awesome albums (The Idiot, Lust For Life, Brick By Brick and American Caesar), some more or less decent ones (Kill City, New Values, Naughty Little Doggie, Skull Ring) and a few lackluster ones (Soldier, Party, Zombie Birdhouse, Blah Blah Blah, Instinct, Avenue B, Beat 'em Up). I haven't heard the new album (Preliminaires) yet, so all I know about it is that it apparently was heavily influenced by jazz music from the 20s and 30s.

Hopefully this helps.

---

So yeah, tl;dr:

The Stooges: self-titled, Fun House, Raw Power, Metallic K.O.
Iggy's solo stuff: The Idiot, Lust for Life, Brick by Brick, American Caesar

I know as a punk rock hipster that I "have" to love his music, but it's hard to get into him for me.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
