So guys, it is time we kick this band into high gear! So we should start with a cover. I kinda just picked three bands that we all for the most part love, or would be really easy to learn. So whichever you pick, whether it's a band's song or 'Other', please specify which song!

Black Sabbath, definitely. Easy, but powerful... except for Rhodes' solos depending on the era of the song we choose.

The solos shouldn't be too much of a problem, we got some pretty wicked cool guitarists on here
I should mention that there is an 'Other' option, but I messed up haha

I'd say a heavy metal version of Mr. Sandman the 1950's song

That's a bold but wise choice GP. Because the song calls for harmonica and cowbell. I dunno, definitely an option. I just may be a little bitter because I don't know how to play it yet

You can play it with a ton of instruments and it only sounds better the bigger it gets.
As an alternative, Bad Apples wouldn't be a bad choice.

"Fairies Wear Boots" by Sabbath would work well. You can feature a few instruments with simple 12-bar improv in the beginning, and it's basically a jam tune at heart.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Oh hell yeah. Sabbath would be fun as hell for bassists, if we do Sabbath, I'd like to stick "Bassically" on the beginning of the song (maybe with some trademark Enshin tremolo plucking), no matter which song we wind up doing. Dibs.
Also, I'd like to throw these out there:
Symptom of the Universe (with the jam in the end)
Hole in the Sky
Paranoid might be good to start
Black Sabbath
N.I.B.
Into the Void
SWEET LEAF!!!
Sabbra Cadabra
A National Acrobat (maybe do what Metallica did and merge them)
Iron Man (duh)
Rat Salad could be fun for drummers, kind of the Sab equivalent to "Moby Dick" (never thought of it that way before)
Hand of Doom
War Pigs (I'd need to learn the solo bassline)
FUCKING SABBATH!
As for "Other", "For Whom the Bell Tolls", anyone? I'll even do the effects and fills like Cliff would do live. But then someone would have to play Lars' part. :/

haha easy there enshin, keep it in your pants
I think we need to pick a piece that leaves space for those that wish to solo to have plenty of opportunity to. If we go the Sabbath route, I'm all for a 'Bassically' intro.

Why not do a "Stone Soup" stlye original. Give it to the rythym people first. (Bassists and Drummers) They lay down a chord/key progression and beat, then the frontliners (Rythym and lead Guitars) can slap solos and such on top.
Example:

Check out the song, "Space Cat". It was done that way. No pre planning or anything. Just built the song layer by layer.

I voted Sabbath, because its impossible to go wrong there. However, I would KILL to hear a "Back in Black" cover.
Good luck guys. (<-- sincere, lest someone was unsure.)

Something instrumental would be good. Transylvania by Iron Maiden maybe.

Well, we need to involve singers too. And Hawk, you don't want to be our percussionist? Tambourine maybe?
And yeah, there's the chance that those of us without recording equipment may not be able to participate, which REALLY sucks! But we'll just see how this goes.

There's adapters that allow you to plug guitars into sound cards, probably for mics too.

Just curious, what songs by the above artists would you have in mind that would be able to include everyone?

Well I really like the idea of 'Bad Obsession', because you could very easily integrate a horn and percussion section into it. And as far as Sabbath goes, I'm not sure. The great thing about Sab is that all the part are complicated, yet simple, and it doesn't matter how many times you layer one of Iommi's riffs, it's only gonna sound heavier.

It probably wouldn't be the popular choice, but I almost wonder if you all shouldn't either go with a band who is notable for using many instruments, like CCR, ZZ Top, Edgar Winter Group, etc. Also, solo artists who have a band backing them usually have a larger rhythm section, for example, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (Clarence Clemons anyone?), Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band (aka Eddie and the Cruisers), Huey Lewis and the News (I know Ross isn't a big fan), etc.
I'm sure that last group of examples won't be as popular, but bands like that usually use a lot of sax, harmonica, keyboards, etc. A lot of brass in bands like that.
Another band that might be good due to the amount of different sounds they put into their songs might be Pink Floyd. But their songs are so long and sometimes use some unconventional shit. I also don't know how complicated it would be to do.
I don't know. I'm not in on this so it's really not my call. I'm just throwing some ideas out there to maybe help get everyone a part.
Bad Obsession is a good choice though.

I think all of these are good suggestions. Just maybe something that isn't too obscure so I'd be able to download it and hear what the original sounds like...

I would definitely approve of Creedence, especially 'Lookin' Out My Back Door." I have difficulty with the chords for that one, but can play the solo (on guitar, not bass, not enough strings on bass) pretty good.
As far as Springsteen goes, if there's no saxophonist, I could play the sax solo on the bass. It'd have to be a string lower until I get a 5-string, though. :/
As for Huey Lewis, their early work was a bit too New Wave for my taste, but when Sports came out in '83, I think they really came into their own, both commercially and artistically.

Any 1/4 to 1/8 audio adapter will work. Just plug into the "Line In" port on your sound card. (Usually Colored RED)
Radioshack has them for $5:

Works fine for guitars.
