I'm not sure whether this should go in Music or General Discussion, but it's here now.
Anyway, I'm thinking of getting a decent MP3 player, because I am damn sick of hearing a new song I like, buying the one song on Napster, and then being stuck without being able to listen to it in the car.
(Here's the newest song I came across that inspired all this, BTW.

But I'm not sure. What's really bugging me is - DRM. It absolutely rots me that I can pay for a song and not be able to put it on my MP3 player without first burning it onto a CD and then ripping it back. That's time-consuming and gets expensive with normal CDs, whereas I don't even know if you can do it with re-writable CDs.
I don't really want an iPod because I hate all things Apple and I don't want to be forced to use iTunes.
I'm still pondering all the ins and outs of this.

I'm partial to the Zune, but you'd have to use the Zune software (which is just as annoying as iTunes if not more). Or maybe a Toshiba Gigabeat, which is the forerunner to the Zune.
EDIT: Someone finally made a hack! I can ditch the piece of shit Zune software!
EDIT EDIT: The installer is a bitch to get, but lets you view the Zune in Windows Explorer, enable AutoPlay, and sync in almost any media player, including iTunes. The only catch is that the Zune software still needs to be on your computer. I'll throw the engadget link here, and a MegaUpload download link here (the official download route requires signing up on two Zune forums).

Yeah, I'm having a look around, and I think I'd be willing to spring for a player of some type. It doesn't solve the problem, though, that I still won't be able to just buy one song off Napster or iTunes or what have you, and be able to listen to it in the car right away. (From what I understand, Amazon offers DRM-free music but not in Canada.)

I hate Apple as much as the next guy, but iPod is the way to go. Because it's so ubiquitous there are a shitload of accessories for it, so it's the easiest one to hook up to your car radio.

I'm all Negatory on the sansa. My girlfriend has one and it crashes...A lot. I use an old RCA mp3 player with a 2GB SD card, which cost me around 60-80 bucks total. I don't think they sell my model anymore, but there's alot of RCA mp3 players. My advice is to get one that your computer can read as a mass storage device. Ipods, well they work from what I hear, but I never have the cheese to buy that kind of equipment.
Here's a pic:

I see Sony makes a digital Walkman. I wonder if it's any good.

Yeah, I wanna do that too, but it's not available to Canadians. I wonder if I can do it via an internet proxy, but I haven't looked into how one would do that.

I don't know, but hopefully it's not in some kind of bullshit Sony proprietary format.

Toshiba Gigabeat all the way I say again. Sucks to hear about the Sansa. There is a guy at work here that has one, never crashes, and plays both music and video. You can catch him on lunch sometimes watching porn on it.

For what it's worth, I ordered a Zune and it arrived today. I'm setting it up right now.

Regarding my DRM hate: just wanted to let you guys know that I've used a program called AnalogWhole to remove the DRM from all my music. My library is now 100% DRM-free! Which I'm pretty happy about.
