Nothing disappoints me more than when a band has a cool name and then their music isn't that good.

For example, Teenage Casket Company. That's like the best name ever. It's a cool name on its own, but it also seems to be a jab at depressing alternative and emo bands like Nirvana and Dashboard Confessional that make all the little high school kids pretend they're apathetic and suicidal, which makes it even better. But musically, they're just meh.

Fallout Boy. Though calling them mediocre would be giving them way too much credit.

I'm sure that it's Fall Out Boy...like falling out of a relationship or something...not like nuclear radiation. It's a testament to their inherit lameness.

Punk is rife with these. The Casualties, Kill Your Idols...they know their music sucks so they have have a good name so shallow, superficial punk worshiping teenagers will have no choice but to like them.

Fun Fact: Kill Your Idols is named after a t-shirt. The t-shirt featured a picture of Jesus and said "Kill Your Idols" on it. It was one of several t-shirts prominently worn by Axl Rose during the Use Your Illusion tour.

Cycle Sluts from Hell. The only reason I bothered listening to a couple of their songs was because of their name. It's also the only reason I remember them at all.

Yeah, punk should be excluded from this, because 90% of all punk band have cool names, and 92% of all punk sucks.

They admitted this is who they named the band after:

They changed the spelling to two words, so they wouldn't get sued by the game's trademark holders.

And, yes they are also my first vote for best name, worst band.

I read a quote from Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy saying that they were asking people in the audience for a name, and someone shouted out Fallout Boy, which he said was "Bart Simpson's alter ego on Simpsons"....loser

That's a bit steep. I'd put the number of crappy bands more around 85%, especially when you add the 70s and 80s into the equation.

But your point is relevant.

Syd, that was a neat story. All the more shame that the band sucks.

I think Avenged Sevenfold fit the name, and Slipknot ain't that great of a name...I can't think of any other type of music it'd fit either

Not actually a band name, but I'm listening to Public Enemy's "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" at the moment and was reminded of how disappointing it was to me that the song "Miuzi Weighs a Ton" wasn't about a fat japanese guy.

I cant think of any mediocre bands with good names, but I can think of some good bands with shitty names:

A-Ha (Living Daylights Theme is better than Take on Me, unless its the Reel Big Fish cover)
Duran Duran (A View To a Kill, dont know why im going on the bond kick)
Alien Ant Farm (not quite good, but not quite bad, kind of like coke zero)
Jimmy Eat World

Thats all I can think of for now.

Most of the Bond themes do kick ass and i agree that for A-Ha and Duran Duran, there tribute to Bond is better then most of their songs.

someone mentioned Cake. I think it's the other way around for them, they have some good songs but the name is off.

I bet you nothing that myspace is filled with bands with awesome names but meh songs.
