I'm just curious. I know it's a rule here and on a lot of other forums. I've actually seen some moderators get seriously pissed at people for doing it, to the point where you'd think he's coming to rape your sister or something.
So what is the actual reason for it? Does it use up bandwith or something?

If you have something relevant to add, we have nothing against it here. But to bump an old thread with a stupid two-word post often makes people think thats theres a new thread and they end up reading every post only to realize that they just wasted their time reading a topic that no one cares about anymore.

Exactly.
If there's an old thread on Manowar or Mario 64 and you want to talk about one of those things, we would much rather have you bump the old thread than start a new one. But if you're just being retarded, then you're going to get yelled at.
Case in point: The Motivational Poster thread has died several times and then been resurrected.

Ah ok, gotcha.
I wasn't planning on doing it or anything, just wanted to know.

I'm a big fan of forums that get mad at you for makign a new thread instead of using the search function.

This kind of rule on forums always frustrates me when it's taken to a retarded extreme. I found a Duke Nukem forum somewhere that wasn't active at all (unsurprisingly), but there was this nutjob moderator who would SCREAM at you if you resurrected a topic that was over four months old. It wasn't just the people who added stupid tag-along comments, either, it was like this for EVERY new post. As the icing on the cake, the moderator would then lock the thread, no questions asked.
I also think that it's common courtesy to search a forum for some specific question you have that has probably been answered before, but it's also nothing to blow up about if someone doesn't.

Agreed. If you don't find a year-old thread that someone started on a topic you wanted to talk about, it's not really your fault.
As for forums that don't want ANY old topics revived, you can set your forum to auto-prune old topics so that they're deleted and you don't have to worry about people bumping them. The reason that most of these sites DON'T auto-prune is because they're secretly hoping that all their old threads will help their SEO. Of course, there are also phpBB hacks that auto-lock old topics for you.

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. The more threads and content you have on a forum the more likely it is that somebody searching for something in Google will end up on your site.
And phpBB is the software the forums run on. It's the dominant open-source software for Bulletin Boards like this.
