in a dream? I'm sure we all have or atleast were about to before we woke up in the nick of time. Has anyone actually died in their dreams and not woken up immediately? Like last night I almost drowned and woke up gasping for breath, and the time before that I woke up when I was caught in an explosion with my heart racing so fast I had to take 15 minutes to collect myself before forcing my self back to sleep.
The mind obviously seems to make your body think dreams are real, but since I was drowning does that mean I was legitimately holding my breath or not breathing in real life? If I didn't wake up when I drowned, would I pass out while dreaming? Would that just make it another dream?
Discuss...or ignore...whichever.

Your body doesn't act upon what you do or experience in your dreams (apart from maybe a higher heart rate etc.). That's why you can run around in a dream, but your body doesn't leave your bed. I once actually dreamed that I had gone "past normal human needs": I didn't have to breath air, I didn't have to eat or drink and I didn't have to do what you have to do after you've eaten and drunk enough. So in my dream I didn't breath, yet I obviously didn't suffocate IRL.
I've experienced the opposite of what you're describing though. For some people the mechanism that keeps their body from acting upon what they are doing in their dreams sometimes is still active even after they wake up. It's not a nice experience, I can tell you. Basically you're lying in your bed fully aware of your surroundings and the fact that you're awake, yet you can't lift your arm or move any part of your body. It takes a lot of concentration to "get your body back". I'm glad it only happened a couple of times to me. A lot of those "When I was abducted by aliens I was fully aware of what was going on, yet I couldn't move" stories can be explained by this phenomenon BTW.

There was one time I dreamt that a giant venomous snake sank its teeth directly into my heart and I started to die before waking up.
Another time I was dreaming that this scary demon thing was stealing my soul, and apparently my eyes were open and I was breathing really shallow, but still fully asleep.
And to touch on what Tyop is saying, there's a phenomenon called 'Sleep Paralysis' that's actually fairly common. It happens most often when you're lying on your back, and just waking, or just falling asleep. Between consciousnesses if you will. Your body is immobile, and you become aware of this fact and suddenly become fully alert but unable to move or speak. Most people also note an SMP, Sensed Malevolent Presence that is just out of their field of vision. It's most commonly refered to as Old Hag, because people believed a female demon was sitting on their chest.
It's happened to me twice and it's scary as fucking hell.

Sleep paralysis does suck. Your lucky it's only happened twice.. I would say I've had it happen anywhere from 25-40 times in my life. I also have sleep apnea sp? so im not sure if that has anything to do with it, but yeah basically you become conscious during REM when your body is shut down. Every time it happens, it's horrifying, and trying to go back to sleep after it happens is a pain. As far as the original question, they are not technically linked, however I was taking medication once that has a side effect of depressed breathing, and I had a dream I was drowning, to wake up gasping for air. Even though the internet is right in front of me, im too lazy to look it up, but I would assume that sometimes your physical needs will dictate your dreams, but not vis versa

All my dreams are silly, worthless ones. Like, I'll dream that someone I wanted to talk to online has come on and started chatting. And then I'll wake up and I'll be frustrated because one, it isn't true, and two, my mind doesn't have anything better to do with my dreams.
Most of my true "nightmares" involve spiders, but I haven't had anything crazy-scary like near-death/dying experiences.
I've heard that in those "falling dreams", if you ever actually hit the ground, it's a good indication that you'll be dying in real life soon. But, obviously, that's just hearsay so I don't know if it means anything. I can't help but think that if I had a falling dream and hit the ground, I'd wake up screaming about not being able to feel my legs.

I don't think I've actually died.
I did dream that I was fired from my job yesterday.

I had a dream that I was getting on a bus and for some reason didn't have enough money to get on. Then for some reason Rukia Kuchiki (from *Bleach* it's an anime)
gave me the extra fare to get on the bus.
Okay so far the dream is only a little fucked.
So, I am on this bus trying to go North but for some reason the bus makes a "U" turn and is going South (I don't realize it at the time) when I realize I'm going the wrong way I get off and I'm like in farm country (I was in the city 2 minutes ago...).
Anyway I go to lean on this fence and I find a can of Mountain Dew (okay here is fucked up it actually tasted like Mountain Dew too), once I finished it I go walking down this one street.
The thing here is that the street is kinda suburban and for some reason I see a tree growing on a shed. So, I kept walking (and for no apparent reason it got really fucking dark)then I see a cave and this old guy starts talking to me.
He didn't actually say anything at least there was no audio in my dream
Then for no damn reason we are on a rickety ass bridge attached to 2 cliffs can hardly see the bottom and he transforms into a tiger (right at that point I was thinking wtf) so I like okay and I turn into a black panther and we start fighting on this shitty bridge.
I get him pined to the bridge and then it starts to break so I jump off of him and he falls through the bridge I turn back into myself and I start laughing in the 3rd person (meaning I saw myself laughing) well it was funny until I see him transform from water to human behind me while I was laughing.
Well then he knocked my ass of the bridge and I woke up.
*If you don't know that Bleach is an anime and a way to keep white clothes white you should watch some TV sometime.
*If you do watch it then read this:
I had another dream (won't go into details) that Uryuu or Ishida guy was trying to steal the Triforce (yes from *Zelda*) so I got pissed 'cause he tried to steal my pieces so I got pissed of and kick him in the nuts and took his piece
So I got the full Triforce but the dream ended by me chasing someone down the hill because they stole my Mudkip.
*Zelda refering to the game not the person that the game is based on.
Either way you should wake up before you die in a dream, but if you see Freddy run!

I'm so bananas I'm showing up to your open casket,
to fill it up with explosive gases,
and close it back,
with a lit match in it,
while I sit back, and just hope it catches.
Blow you to fragments,
laugh,
roll you, and smoke the ashes.

I had a dream that I was walking through town and all the lights start going out, so I walk into Save On. I make a rude remark about "Jews and Niggers" (pardon me, I would never actually use the N word in real life lol), and the whole store is full of rabbis and black people. So they start chasing me out of Save-On into the park nearby.
I'm running and running and I hit this dead end. I look back and the mob's heading for me. I look forward and there's the room I'm sleeping in (in first person too, not the regular third). Look back and there's the mob. Look forward, there's the room.
So I clue in that it's a dream and start blinking like fucking mad, and it was the weirest feeling, I felt myself crossing from the 'dreamplane' or whatever into real life.

My friend Bob has acually died and lived to tell about it.
He was in the Navy, and his heart stopped for 3 minutes, which was enough to declare him legally dead. At about the 3 1/2 minute mark, they finally managed to jump start him. He received an Honorable Discharge for "Dying in the line of duty." He has it framed on his wall.
He also loves to tell people how he "died for his country."

I'm fairly surprised that this is such a common thing. I always thought it would be pretty rare. I also never experienced it while falling asleep, but only when I wake up. When I fall asleep and become aware of that fact I usually just jump up in bed and am pissed that I'm not sleeping yet.
As for the dying in a dream thing I've died pretty much every way I can imagine: Stabbing, shooting, falling, drowning and getting suffocated by an ever growing piece of giant cheddar. I always wake up when I die in a dream though, so I was never actually "dead" in one of my dreams.
Luckily not all my dreams are as bad as that. I once fell asleep after a 24 hour run of playing nethack and dreamed about brushing my teeth with a blessed +2 rustproof toothbrush. Best. Dream. Ever.

When I was a kid I dreamt that I was in a police station, then some officer randomly came by and shot me in the chest with a shotgun. I started slowly fading as I held my chest and went to the ground. I even had time to think "Well, I guess now I'm going to find out if God exists". And then I woke up.
I had sleep paralysis once in college while I was waking up from a nap. Freaked the shit out of me, especially since I had never heard of it before.

The only weird thing that happens to me when i dream is when i sorta dream about something that i have dreamed about before. It sorta becomes 1 continuous dream even if i havent dreamed about it in years. Its so familiar but i never no where it comes from til im awake.

Last week I had a dream in which Batman killed me. Poison Ivy turned me into a plant hybrid person and we chased Batman around in the Batcave. He got away in his airplane and set the Batcave to self-destruct. Because I was half-tree I could not run so I was caught in the explosion, tossed violently and then came the flames. I woke up before I started burning thought.
