I don't know what the deal is up in Canada though. As far as I know, if you don't file, you jsut don't get any money. Whatever.

As the son of an accountant, having done my taxes for the last 8 years, dont sweat it. You can file for an extension for free.

Yeah, most of mine has to go to bills as well, but I conceded that at least some part of it should go to fun so it's buying my way through the Shadowmoor prerelease this weekend. Er...not all of it, just $150 put aside...

Mine was done in January. And the money I got back was spent before January ended.

I actually had to pay this year - over 600 bucks. My only consolation is that I'll get most of that back from the stimulus package.

K, I remembered that I don't get paid enough to owe the government...they just owe me money, so they don't care whether or not I do my taxes
Wait til I owe them though.

Great! By then, that $600 will be worth $400 of today's money after they print all the extra currency it will take to make sure everyone gets their stimulus package!
The package reeks of desperation, especially when the money we're spending on the "war" post-Saddam hanging could've been used domestically.
Having said that, I filed my taxes February 2nd and had both refunds by February 7th. Long live H&R Block's TaxCut Online!

Bingo. Spending hundreds of millions of dollars a week whilst cutting taxes enormously and we wonder why we're having so much trouble. 90 years of modern fiscal policy in this country and we still can't figure out that we need to pay the bills.

We did figure it out; it was called "the 1990's".

The 750 billion we've spent these last five years on Iraq is only one percent of our cumulative GDP for that time period. A drop in the bucket. Link
In the 1990s, our budget was balanced at the cost of reducing our military severely, leaving us unprepared for the battles we had to start facing in the 21st century.
As for the economy, it naturally goes up & down. We're due for a recession, especially when people and banks are foolish enough to fund houses that the buyer cannot afford. It's smacks of the 20s when people bought stocks on margin. Fortunately, we now have failsafes in place to lessen the impact of this idiocy.
And yay, just when inflation was becoming a problem again because of oil and food prices/demand, the stimulus package is here to exacerbate matters! Like I said though, it's all part of the natural cycle. Just ride it out.

Personally, I'd rather the country have a balanced budget than an overfunded military. If we play our cards right we shouldn't NEED to start fighting full-scale wars. But that's just a thought. Not trying to start a debate here.
As for me, I don't have an income so I didn't really think about paying taxes. That and the fact that once I asked my father about them, he told me that he had already filed for me.

I'll agree that it's all cyclical and I sure as hell am not giving neither Clinton nor the Republican Congress the credit for the economic boom of the 90's. But I'd say there was a reduction in military costs because we weren't sticking our noses in everyone else's business and we didn't NEED to beef up the military.
In fact, intel people had been warning both Clinton and Bush for months before 9/11 and most of those people were rebuffed until it was too late, so I can't agree to either assumption (not necessarily made by you, but inferred at least) that a lack of funding led to the attacks or left us unprepared for a response. There aren't enough soldiers not because we can't afford it but because people don't want to go over there and fight someone else's civil war for them.
Did we need to go after Osama and the Taliban? Fuck yes; they attacked us. Did we need to depose Saddam while we were still searching for Osama (and failing to find him)? Probably not, though I can't say I regret us finding him. But do we still need to be in Iraq fighting their civil war for them? Hell no. And while 750 bilion might b a small percentage of our GDP, it's still a huge chunk of change when schools have been getting the shaft all over the country and people are losing their homes left and right. Let's not pretend that the money used to pay for the war we're in right now couldn't be put to better use here in America.
And I also agree that printing billions more in currency is not going to alleviate the current financial situation. I'm all for doing what NEEDS to be done to help America get through this, but making the money people have saved up in accounts and 401k benefits worth less just to give John Q. Moron a check for $600 bucks to make him feel better is moronic. It's the difference between weathering the recession and stretching it out longer than it has to go.

Somehow, my accountant figured out that I got a $1734 refund from the Federal Gov't. I have no idea how. So if I disappear off the boards for a while, you can pretty much bank that I'm in prison for tax fraud.
Fun fact: My refund from the State of PA- $1.00.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us. |

I owed the state of Illinois $3.99. Freaking hilarious. It was a waste of paper writing a check out for that amount.
Well said by the way, Spanky.

Another year of reported losses. Someone told me that by filing my failing financial records with the government it'll pay off one day.

Bingo. Once the Soviets were out of the picture, we didn't really need the military to make up 50% of our budget anymore. We didn't necessarily need it that high to fight the Soviets, in my oppinion, but we certainly didn't after they were gone. If there's one thing I can't stand, it's Clinton being attacked for shrinking the military. Hell yes he did. The only enemy capapble of taking us on had ceased to exist.
Great post as a whole, Spanky.

My grandfather and two of my uncles are CPAs, so I had my taxes done pretty early. I got around $80 total.

I guess there is hope for America still
In Portugal, you get an extended deadline if you file your taxes via Internet.
The bad news is that you need to spend an insane amount of money in order to get any refunds. Therefore, people with a low income such as myself, and who are unable to waste their money, never ever get any benefits. Unless, of course, they cheat...but the penalty for that isn't worth the risk.

My buddy spent $43 filing his taxes, and got $26 refund....lawl at him.
I'm gonna wait til I have to file. Until it reaches the point that I owe the gov't and not the opposite, they're going to leave me alone. So for now, I'm gonna build up my 4+ years of working, my 1st year of college, and all other claimable sources.... then if I get enough, I'll buy a fucking 1967 Sunburst Gibson Les Paul....
