First of all, this has nothing to do with that fucking awful movie. Go talk about it in the movie forums if you must.

I wonder if heavier passengers of the Titanic were more or less likely to survive.

I doubt any study was ever done, but I imagine that the situation would be a rare one where being obese would be a positive thing.

People who are larger tend to cool slower than smaller people. People who have a higher body fat percentage tend to cool slower than people with a lower body fat percentage.

Since muscle weighs more than fat I imagine that an over weight person would probably have an easier time floating due to greater buoyancy, this would save energy and perhaps keep them alive longer in the water. Thin people would have to tread water with more energy and tire quicker.

At the time of the tragedy I imagine that a larger person would be more physically able to move others out of the way to save themselves.

I am not sure about the times, but I think it was still a time in history where people who were more affluent had the ability to buy more food and were often times more plump because of it. Perhaps more of them had better rooms closer to the main deck and were able to get to the life boats first.

What do you think?

Fat people would probably stay warmer and float better, but they'd probably get exhausted faster.

Rich people were more likely to survive, because they were on higher up decks. Also, they eventually realized that poor people were taking their precious life rafts, so they sealed off the lower decks, trapping the poor people there.

I can't confirm it, because I don't watch trash, but I've been told Leonardo DiCaprio made it out before that happened.

Poor people would be skinny right? Since they... like can't afford food?

So this would be another vote for Fat people
