All right, this has been killing me since Martin Luther King Day. I was in History class, and I was like, "aw man, it's Martin Luther King Day, stupid Americans get the day off" suddenly, this mega bitch is all "I'm American, you got a problem with that??" and gets all up in my face, then goes to the washroom. After the big scene she caused finally cooled, she came back, asked the teacher to grab her stuff, and took off. Now I didn't mean any offense to America whatsoever. It was just a sarcastic comment and I said it sarcastically. Am I in the wrong? Or is she just a crazy mentaloid?

Speaking of black people(sorry, I really really don't know what they prefer to be called, cuz not all are from Africa or America), I have a tendency to wear a Confederate Flag bandana around my neck, Eddie Van Halen style. I wear it as a sign of Lynyrd Skynyrd fandom. I was walking down the street and saw a "black" guy. I gave him the smile and nod, like I do with everyone, but his eyes were transfixed on my bandana. Should this really be an issue anymore? He looked really angry, was it just him? Also, this happened on the Friday after the MLK Day incident...

Speaking as someone who usually has knee-jerk reactions to anything that's slightly anti-American, what you said was harmless. It was obviously just a joke and you lamenting the lack of a holiday.
As to the Confederate Flag issue, one should realize that it means different things to different people. For many in the South it has become a symbol of heritage, for blacks it's a symbol of racism, and for those in the North, it can be a symbol of secession. Personally, I see it as a symbol of the 10th Amendment/States' Rights. You have to know the context before you can judge, but not be surprised if someone reacts that way, considering their perspective.
However, considering how sensitive it is, I find it surprising that any Southern governments can use it in any official capacity, especially considering it's a symbol of a failed rebellion.

Oh, I completely understand why he would be offended. It just really threw me, and I felt just horrible because I am not racist in any form( I freaked out on someone yesterday for called homosexuals fags and saying they can help it(one of my best friends is a lesbian)) and Martin Luther King is one of my alltime idols. I don't like being labeled anything I'm not, but we're in Canada where it's not AS big a deal. Should I maybe prepare for more of this kind of reaction?

those people are Dukes of Hazzard fans...I know a guy that painted his truck like the General Lee...anyway, I happen to like the flag because I am such a Skynyrd fan and it instantly brings Freebird to my mind: one of my favorite songs of all time

The original Dukes of Hazzard series ruled. That why I have a t-shirt that has the flag on the back, and a model car of the General Lee. I have to admit though, I am somewhat ashamed to wear that shirt in public sometimes. My friends that are black don't seem to care though.

Some of them aren't - and I'm totally plagiarizing the book "Confederates in the Attic". Go read that instead of listening to me butcher it. That talks all about the Confederate flag... and I totally hated that book. So don't read it either.
And Bruce McCulloch talks about people who hang an American flag in the window of an apartment because the people living in it have better things to do with their money than buy curtains.

I think this fellow Canadian Ross needs to go grab a copy of Canadian Civil Rights History...  Though it's true that we don't celebrate Martin Luther King Day, it's not for lack of importance. It's just not a recognized holiday here. Ever hear of Harriet Tubman? (I'm guessing not) You may also want to look up a documentary made by PBS a few years ago showing the civil rights movement in America. It's very informative.

Martin Luther King Jr was a very important figure in American history, and holds a sacred place in the hearts and minds of many people the world over. True, we have a holliday in his honor, but that's about it. Most major cities have renamed a major road to "Martin Luther King Jr Bvld/Rd/Ave etc. You want to know the sad truth is, though?
Someone once told me that if you are ever want to score drugs in a town you don't know, just find MLK blvd. What's scary is that is sadly very true. I know here in Portland OR, MLK Blvd is in Northeast Portland, which is the lower class area of town. It is also the only place in my life where somebody randomly walked up to me outside of a KFC and offered me a hit off his crack pipe. I kid you not.

No kidding Knyte, as pretty much everyone on these forums knows, I'm from Georgia (like 20 minutes south of Atlanta in fact). There's a scene in Borat where they're passing through MLK Blvd in Atlanta and at that moment I looked to the friend I saw it with and we both almost yelled "Drive the hell out of there!"
One of my cousins (in 5th grade) thought telling some black girls that were messing with her "I wish MLK had never lived so you guys couldn't mess with me in school" was a pretty mean jab. Personally I found it blatantly appaling to say such a thing, and she was forced to apologize by her teacher and principal.
