Meebo is going offline next month so I need a new AIM client. Good logging support is a must. Different icons per account would be nice too. What do you use? Right now I'm looking at Digsby but if there's anything lighter then I want to hear about it.

I have never had much real anger towards software developers. They make choices that sometimes don't pan out and it sucks, but I don't get really mad...

Well... Google, thanks for getting me upset about something. You are turning off the best web based multi-protocol messaging tool.

I don't give a damn if it competes with your other priorities... this is mean spirited and "EVIL". Shame on you.

Yeah, I use IMO on my phone. Works pretty well for what I need it for.

Trillian is pretty nice. I used to use it pretty frequently a few years ago, and like Digsby, it lets you set up multiple clients such as AIM.

I haven't really ever taken much of a technical look at it, though. I assume that logging and chat histories are synonymous; in that case, I was able to look up contacts and quickly get text documents for conversations between now and 2009, so I would think that logging support is at least decent. I can't say much on different icons per account, unfortunately.

The software occasionally pulls some light spam-oriented messages, such as recommendations to upgrade to the full version. I don't recall it ever getting so out of hand that I wanted to uninstall it. I believe Digsby would be a bit more ridiculous in this area.

The current version takes less up than 30 MB of space and isn't very resource-intensive.

Meebo moving their primary draw off the front page and showcasing yet another social news platform in its place was the first sign.

That said, I don't think Google's acquisition has much to do with this decision. If it is, then something else is probably going to take its place, but given Google's track record with chat programs, whatever comes up will probably not be as worthwhile.

I would imagine that google would want to create a web based IM client for their ChromeOS. Still, as you said, the other aspects of Meebo were growing and becoming more appealing to companies like Facebook/Google.

It was only a matter of time then. At least they were kind enough to let us save our chatlogs. I woulda had a fit like you did otherwise.
