Venus is traveling across the sun today, and you may want to take a look, because you sure as hell ain't gonna be around for the next one in 2117.
NASA is going nuts about it, and they set up a camera to record the thing on a live feed that's gonna start around 5:45 EDT tonight: http://sunearthday.nasa.gov/webcasts/nasaedge/
It's visible in the US around sunset, but damnit, please don't be a dumbass and stare right at the sun.

I plan on being around well past 2117, even if I am a damn frisbee.

Trust me, you won't be. My checklist has you scheduled for 2043.

So what would be the best way to look at it? Would sunglasses be effective?

I'm always confused by all these warnings about starting directly at the sun. I've stared at the sun lots of times with my bare eyes and I haven't gone blind one bit.
It's cloudy in my area though, so I guess I'll just go with the NASA live video tonight.

I just got to see this, because the teacher in my science class let us go outside with a specialized pair of binoculars (had a filter on the lens side designed for this kind of use).
Also, while you might not (immediately) go blind viewing this with sunglasses or nothing, you surely won't see much, due to the obvious fact that the sun is a giant bright ball of gas and fire, and Venus is a tiny dull rock in comparison.

Sounds like you have really strong eyes, you should look at the sun with a telescope and test this theory.

NOT a good idea Blackout. That is really really strong for a beginner. Start by using a magnifying glass. You'll have to adjust it to find that perfect view though.

I guess I do. I also wear my contacts all the time only taking them off once every few weeks or so. Been doing so since I was 13.
