Gee, I feel pretty stupid. ^^;

Where do I begin? Earlier this afternoon, I was at the gym, doing some lateral pulldowns on a machine that uses removable weights. While taking the weights off, I stupidly let a 45-pound weight fall out of my hand, and it landed on my right big toe. I heard a nasty crunch and was in extreme pain. After getting it bandaged up by some paramedics, my folks came over to the gym and drove me to an urgent care.

While I was there, I got it repeatedly cleaned out, got an x-ray on it and got it bandaged over. Thankfully, it was apparently only a minor fracture; however, the toenail was seriously damaged and had to be removed. We got some antibiotics and some painkillers.

It'll only get better in time, though. The worst part is all over.

Heh I've torn off the toenail on my right big toe myself. Did that while moving a bookcase in sandals, but rather than be smart and go to the hospital and have them remove it while it was still partially attached, I grabbed a pair of pliers, closed my eyes, and did it myself while my brother and a friend watched and tried not to vomit. Then we casually walked into Walgreens bought a large tube of neosporin and some bandages and wrapped it right up. Needless to say I never moved anything in sandals again. Hope it gets better soon though, and watch it when the nail grows back because when my nail grew back it came in a little too wide and was dug into the skin on the sides of the nail which hurt like hell and was even worse trying to cut with clippers to fix.

Don't feel so bad. I had a dog bite off half of the tip of my nose about three months ago. The flesh was just gone, leaving a gaping, profusely bleeding chasm. I looked like Chris Farley in Dirty Work.

A trip to the ER, a near drowning by the doctor cleaning the wound out, and six stitches later, they pulled the edges of the hole closer. It did end up healing, I don't even have much of a scar. The body is quite amazing.

Oh, and I've had a toenail removed twice, same toe. The worst part is NOT over. The worst part is the raw flesh that Is meant to have a nail over it for your entire existence. It's going to hurt, I won't lie to you.

Crap, man. That must've hurt like hell when you pulled it off. I had to get some injections in my toe to make it numb before getting my toenail removed. At least you got some stuff to sterilize it.

And thanks for the warning, too. I'll have to keep an eye on it.

Ouch! I can't believe your nose healed like it did after going through something like that. It almost sounds like something that could never heal, personally.

And now I dread my toenal growing back now.

I've had a toenail removed twice. Once when i dropped a car battery, and the other when my uncle slammed the engine cover on his boat onto my foot twice.

He thought it didn't shut right the first time, after the second he heard me scream

Dang, twice in a row? You're the second person to tell me that.

That's a good question. Maybe Ganon made them big himself to make them easier to smash. Wink

Geez, that looks like it bled a lot.

The only negative big toe experience I've had was in the eighth grade; because my toenails are just naturally awesome, the nail in my left big toe was growing into the skin to the point where I'd come home from school with blood on my left sock. I had to get surgery on my left big toe to get the entire left side of the nail removed, and had to dip my foot in warm water full of epson salts for about three weeks afterwards. It healed up fine, though (though I'm a bit hesitant to clip my toenails, now).

Yeah it hurt like hell, and my friend offered to remove it for me but I knew he'd try to go slow to not hurt me more and I knew that it needed to be done fast. Still it wasn't as bad as breaking my femur was, just took two deep breaths and pulled. Thinking back on it, that was incredibly stupid and I should have went to the hospital. Hindsight is 20/20 I suppose, just lucky I didn't get an infection or anything.

I've had to work ingrown nails out of the flesh of my big toes a few times, the trick is to get two of these:
Image

The idea is that if you pull one end out of the toe the other end of the nail pushes against the other side of the ingrown toe, and hurts like a motherfucker and can cut in to you. If you clamp the embedded portions of both sides of said nail and pop them out of the end of the toe at the same time it's too fast to hurt and the relief is usually worth any minor tissue damage, and unless you have scary goblin toes it doesn't tear your toe flesh up too much. Cutting a divot out of the center of the nail helps it to bend in the middle to accommodate the ends popping free helps too.

That being said that guy is right, pulling a nail completely off a digit is brutal, and hurts for a long time, try and salvage a nail if you can.

Edit, when attempting anything foolish like this hydrogen peroxide and neosporin are your best freinds.

I dropped a manhole cover on my big toe when I was kid. The toe broke and the nail fell off a few days later. I don't remember the exposed flesh hurting all that much and the nail grew back pretty quickly so don't worry too much about that Ky.

This is my greatest fear when I go to martial arts. I have had my toes hit in some way or another 3-4 times. I am more ok with broken bones than I am with ripped off toe nails.

It did. A lot. Side note, I didn't realize you could do that NSFW tag, or even that the pic would be considered such material, sorry guys.

I know the pain of which you speak. Both times my nail was removed was because it was so severely ingrown like yours was. After it happened a third time, they finally let me go to a specialist who cauterized the cells on the side so it could never grow that way again, unlike the GPs who just kept removing it. Haven't had a problem since.

@Jack Slater

Well, it looks like it could've been worse, but that still looks pretty bad. I'm glad you're all better.

@Cameron

Well, that must've sucked hard. At least you're all better.

Also, I have to dip my foot in Epson salt a couple times a day. How did it feel?

@Beach Bum

Now breaking your femur must've hurt like hell a hundred times over.

@Blackout

Interesting advice. I'll have to keep that in mind in an emergency.

@Pandajuice

Ouch! I'm glad you're all better. Also, I'm glad I don't have much to worry about.

@GPFontaine

You might be right to believe that. The top of my toe hurts more than the tip of it.

Oh bro, it was way worse. I wish I had a before picture in profile, there was just a crater. I had to do the epsom salts thing for my first removal, for me it was brutally painful. I don't deal well with stinging pain though, so it may not be so bad for you. I can deal with dull or high pain all day, but not the stinging kind. Oddly enough, the nose didn't hurt at all, I think my body may have immediately gone into shock.

Well, if you guys want a status report, it's been getting better. I've been taking antibiotics, since it is an open fracture, but I had to go to another doctor and get a new antibiotic, since the previous ones made me vomit.

I've also tried the Epsom salts today. They stung a little bit, but weren't as bad as I thought.

Good to hear that things are getting better.

Yeah they are good for keeping infection out of an open wound, always good to have some around the house.
