So apparently one of the first major gaming mags, and likely the only one of them to spawn a TV show (hosted by J.D. Roth), is saying its final farewells. The magazine's last issue comes out soon and its website will be subsumed into PCworld.com come noon on December 5th. Anyone have any memories involving them?
Personally, I preferred EGM back in the day.
The 90s clothing it blinds me.

Wow, thanks for that video Sathien. It brought back a lot of memories of the state of gaming in the early 90s. Also, I totally forgot about JD Roth; that guy was the pimp of kid's TV back in the day.

J.D. Roth has been busy as hell recently... just mostly behind the scenes now.

Only gaming magazine I ever bought was Nintendo Power. My friend used to get PC Gamer though, so I read that.

Only ones I ever bought were Ultra Game Players, Nintendo Power and the occasional EGM.

I read Game Pro. I'll miss them.
I read them and EGM, which is also a dead magazine now.
Internet killed the magazine star I guess.

I have not read GamePro in years, but it is sad they are going away. I used to have subscriptions to a lot of game magazines, too many to remember, but my most missed one is EGM2.

I had both GamePro and EGM for a while but eventually cancelled GamePro because EGM was so much more informative in my opinion. Still it is sad to see them go, but it was inevitable really. By the time they got copies printed and shipped the internet was already weeks ahead of them in information.

Bummer. I got their magazine free in the mail somehow from age 11 to 13, and I liked their methods of reviewing as well as the fact that they had an entire section devoted to RPGs. However, they always played second fiddle to Game Informer, which I've subscribed to since I was seven. EGM ranks third, I guess.

I started reading Nintendo Power, but once I got a Genesis I switched over to Gamepro. I remember how the writers of the articles all had aliases, like Slasher Quan......can't remember any others off the top of my head.

Right.....Scary Larry was the one I was trying to recall. I remember an issue where he and Slasher Quan debated the superiority of Mortal Kombat VS Street Fighter 2. Good stuff.

From its wiki entry:
Many editor names have come and gone. However, there have been many names in the magazine's bylines that many longtime readers remember. Some of these names:
Abby Normal
AgentMarmalade
Ahoy and Avast
Air Hendrix (Paul Curthoys, also used the moniker Bacon, is now Editor-in-Chief at MacLife)
Boba Fatt (never worked at the magazine full-time, but was a contracted freelance writer for several years)
Boss Music
Bro Buzz (Wes Nihei, the long-time Editor in Chief left the company in 2007. [1])
Dan Elektro (also wrote under Bad Hare; he revealed his dual identities in forum posting upon leaving the magazine in 2004.)
D-Pad Destroyer (also wrote under The Freshman, Dunjin Master, and 5-o-clock Shadow. Left in July, 2004 to work as an editor for BioWare, where he now works as a writer.)
Dr. Dave (David Winstead, who went on to Capcom to work with James Goddard on the Street Fighter II arcade series.)
Dr. Mario (Parminder Ressan, formerly of "Game Informer" magazine)
Earth Angel
Fart of War (Shawn Elliott, who left to work at Electronic Gaming Monthly, later moving to Computer Gaming World (which became Games for Windows: The Official Magazine). Left in 2008 to become an Associate Producer at 2K Boston.)
Four-Eyed Dragon
Gideon (Francis Mao, also used Dr. Zombie and Mr. Blister personas, is now creative director at Capcom USA)
Johnny Ballgame (Jon Robinson, left to write for Incite, then became founding editor of IGN Sports. Is now at ESPN.com)
Jonny K
Lawrence of Arcadia
Long-Haired Offender
Lunchbox
Major Mike (Mike Weigand, formerly of EGM)
Miss Spell (reviewed games on occasion, but mostly worked in the magazine's design department)
Mr. Marbles
Nurse Furatu
Papa Frog
RebelPrincess
Rice Burner
Scary Larry (probably the most popular editor in GamePro's history and also the best-known because of his outspoken nature in writing reviews. He left the magazine in 1999 to have more time with his family)
Slasher Quan (one of the few GamePro editors to have his persona moved to a different magazine; he kept it when he moved to Diehard GameFan; online editor Syriel also kept his moniker intact when moving to Hardcore Gamer magazine.)
Star Dingo (Sean Molloy, originally worked in the movies review section of GamePro.com but transitioned into reviewing games [2]. Would eventually work at Computer Gaming World, but left in 2008 to join Blizzard Entertainment.)
Tenacious Moses
The Rookie (later changed his name to The Enforcer; also left to write for Incite in 1999)
The Vixen
Tommy Glide
Vicious Sid (left as of October 2009-Issue#254)

Sushi-X FTW!!!
I was always a bigger fan of EGM but this still saddens me. It's only a matter of time before magazines in general become obsolete.

Gamepro was terrible. To get any more fluff in that magazine you'd have to use Downy.
Even as a kid it was boring to me. By some fluke, when I was in elementary and junior high school I ended up with a subscription to Next Generation, that was a good magazine, often rather in depth interesting articles. And after that I got PC Accelerator, now there was a GREAT magazine, at least for a 13 year old pc nerd haha.

You know, to me, it was Nintendo Power, then NP and Gamepro, then NP and EGM. Gamepro felt like the magazine for video game enthusiasts to outgrow. I enjoyed it, but EGM was where I ultimately went.
Still, its sad to see it go. It's like another chunk of my childhood is gone forever.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

Thanks, life has been a bitch and I haven't had a computer for a long while. But, I got an android phone with unlimited data recently, and I've been on a retro gaming kick as of late, so I thought I would stop by.
