The rest of the world has forgotten it, so I am officially declaring that this movie is another one of MY movies. Like Masters of the Universe and Superman IV, you, movie, are in a league of your own. You hold up just as well as you did back in 1999. No one saw you in theaters, no underground movement was ever started in your honor, but you did make a difference in one boy's heart.

Also, like Superman IV and Fire Walk With Me, a sick amount of your story was cut from you. I have no idea why that is a common thread in movies I love, but maybe the mystery of not knowing how you were intended to be watched made you that much greater.

No other movie since have I seen that had your look, style, flavor, or personality. You were truly original. You also came out in a time when there were no superhero movies. The closest things were Blade and The Matrix. Those were R rated flicks targeted only toward men, but you were wider in diversity covering four quadrants of appeal. The world you created was vast and captivating, leaving much open to interpretation of how it came to be. The characters were all interesting and likable, from the heroes to the villains. Like Charles Laughton, Kinka Usher was a one hit wonder director whose visual style will forever be hauntingly absent from the world of cinema.

My only regret is that in the past 9 years of your life, I haven't quoted nor referenced you nearly as much as you deserve.

Mystery Men, I salute you.

For what it's worth, the characters in Mystery Men were old silver age Charlton characters, just like the Watchmen.

I never saw this. Is it worth:

* Buying
* Renting
* Stealing
* Waiting for it to be shown on TV
* Killing myself to avoid it

It was panned when it came out, but it is a great movie. Gave me all sorts of new uses for bowling balls and sliverware.

I saw it for the first time recently and honestly didn't expect too much. I definitely enjoyed watching it, one of my particular favorite scenes being the rise and fall or The Waffler (I think).

Motherfucker, thank you Tebor! This has always been one of my all-time favorite movies! It's so awesome. I'd say buy it for cheap GP, but definitely rent it.

And hey, Dane Cook played the Waffler Wink

A friend of mine and I are always quoting this movie when we are together. I love The Sphinx's teachings and quote them all the time. And, we always do the Sphinx and Mr, Furious conversations.

Mr. Furious: Why am I doing this, again?
The Sphinx: When you can balance a tack hammer on your head, you will head off your foes with a balanced attack.
Mr. Furious: And why am I wearing the watermelon on my feet?
The Sphinx: I don't remember telling you to do that.

Mr. Furious: Okay, am I the only one who finds these sayings just a little bit formulaic? "If you want to push something down, you have to pull it up. If you want to go left, you have to go right." It's...
The Sphinx: Your temper is very quick, my friend. But until you learn to master your rage...
Mr. Furious: ...your rage will become your master? That's what you were going to say. Right? Right?
The Sphinx: Not necessarily.

My friend and I were talking about William H. Macy and she said she didn't like him because he always plays a sleazy character, and I said 'well obviously you've never seen him as The Shoveler in Mystery Men!'

She was very confused. Sad

Fool! They were characters from a spin-off series of Flaming Carrot which was published by Darkhorse. And Watchmen's characters are only loosely based on Charlton characters, not actually.

This movie is great. I don't like Ben Stiller's character so much, but his character melds everything together. The cast is excellent. Paul Ruben's character is the shit. And the Blue Raja, damn, they don't make movies like that anymore. It may be a little corny at times, but that's what made the movie great. My girlfriend owns it on the best format ever: VHS.

Technically, the Sphinx is a golden age hero who fell into the public domain. And I think Jeebus meant that they were only modeled off silver age characters since most of the characters were unique to the film as opposed to coming from the comic.

Right, those silver age characters who fought crime with bowling balls and throwing silverware...who am I kidding, there are probably exactly those characters in the silver age...

And Wikipedia's telling me that both Sphinxes they list were second rate minor Marvel villains, what do they have to do with anything?

Quote:
The Sphinx was a Golden Age hero who was the creation of Better Publishing; his real name was Ellsworth Forrester, and he first appeared in Exciting Comics #2. Had Better Publishing still been in existence at the time this movie came out, the filmmakers could have been sued for plagiarism. As it is, due to the fact that Better went out of business in the 1950s with no successor, the character is now in the public domain.

So...Ozymandias is somewhat based on him, OK. Though I'm not sure the company would indeed have any right to sue over the similarity though... (I know that's just a quote and not your opinion but)

Edit: My bad, I forgot there's a character called the Sphinx in Mystery Men, I haven't seen it in like a million years. Another bonus to that movie is a Tom Waits cameo!

Whoa, that's what you meant by what does Sphinx have to do with anything? Sorry, I misunderstood.

And I wouldn't say Waits is a cameo as he's in quite a bit toward the end. It's at least as long as his role in Dracula and much longer than his appearance in Domino. Speaking of which, Tom Waits, now there's an actor.

That's a given. Still many singers don't (and shouldn't) translate to film. Waits brings his own game. Actually, that'd make an interesting thread, who are the best singers turned actors. David Bowie also springs to mind.

Tom Waits... is that the guy who did "Missing You"? I'd look it up, but... eh.

EDIT: Nevermind. I remembered my friend showing me a Tom Waits video after I had seen the movie the first time. Maybe it's John Waite I'm thinking of...

=-=checks Wikipedia=-=

Yep, it is.

Tom Waits should probably make his own movie about all his hard luck characters and write all the music as well.

Why has no one mentioned Kel Mitchell? He made that movie as far as I am concerened.
Not everyone has a special bowling ball or magic farting powers, some can only turn invisible when no one, including themselves, is looking. Oh, and he had to be naked. And he made that work for him.

The Bowler: Maybe you should put some shorts on or something, if you wanna keep fighting evil today.
