So last week, we went up to visit my sister at college. She requested her DS Lite, which she had left at home for Jeebus to use. When we got up there, it was discovered that while it will turn on, it doesn't recognize games in either the GBA or DS cart slot. I tried cleaning it out with canned air, no luck.

It worked fine when it was last in my sister's care, but it has spent 3 months in my brother's disgusting shithole or a room, so God knows what could have happened to it.

Are there any other easy fixes I could try? Anything that requires buying special screwdrivers to open it up is out of the question. I have neither the time nor the patience for that.

Was anyone using one of those R4 type cards in it?

No, we're not that cool. Just regular cards. Last game in it when it was working was Scribblenauts, and nothing in the GBA slot.

Weird. I've only heard of those wacky cards fucking up a DS...I'm not really sure how to proceed. Oh wait, I know. You buy a new one from Costco and put the broken one in the box then return it Smile

(HORRIBLE ILLEGAL IDEA)

I know multiple who did that with RROD'd 360s...

There's a place next to my brother's work that has a sign that says they do VCR (!!) and XBox/PlayStation repair. I might take it there and see how much they'd charge to fix it. I figure they probably don't get a lot of business and I might be able to haggle.

Is there any way to do a factory reset on the system? Or even just a hard reset?

Take the battery out for at least 10 seconds. It will reset it to it's original factory settings. When you boot it up after removing the battery, System Settings will come on, just like when she first received it.
