So I just finished mass effect 1 and loved it. I got mass effect 2 today and I hate it, Im taking it back for a refund. I was raped of my cash. They took mass effect and turned it into a 3rd peron shooter instead of a rpg. You run around the galaxy and gather a ton of companions just for one mission at the end that takes like 20 mins. No mako, no exploration, very small galaxy, very little sidequests. Sure the graphics are nice and combat is fun for like 10 mins but I wanted to play an rpg not a gears of war look alike.

We've had this conversation before, and though I prefer the overarching plot of ME1 over ME2, I preferred ME2 overall, though by just a smidge.

I preferred ME2 over ME1 by just a bit as well. I think it was the craptastic vehicle controls in ME1 that was the difference in the two games for me. I still played through them both more than twice apiece though.

I preferred ME2 because the characters were written better, the combat was more engaging, there were less useless stats (they oversimplified it a bit, but at least it felt like my points were actually doing something), and side-quests were less repetitive. I love them both, but those things were enough to push ME2 in front for me.

I have yet to finish ME2 so maybe I shouldn't be commenting here for fear of the game being ruined, but I can never get over the fact that the universe and every living thing in it is in danger in ME1, while in ME2...the earth is in danger. It was such a drastic change in scope and it still baffles me. Dragon Age did the same with with the world in danger in the first, and then having the second just be about a single guy in a city. Bioware has really dropped the ball lately.

I still have not finished the first one. It makes me fall asleep. I could probably be out of my mind on cocaine, wide fucking awake and Mass Effect would still make me fall asleep. It is just really boring. And tedious.

I just recently finished ME1 and really enjoyed it. ME2 is on my shelf, waiting to be played after I finish up a few other things.
From what I've heard, ME2 has less of the exploration that ME1 had. I enjoyed the exploration, as I felt it helped widen the "scope" of the ME universe and gave you a sense of how huge it was (even if it was a somewhat artificial way of doing it). So while I may miss the exploration, I've heard enough good things that I'm still looking forward to playing ME2.

It's especially bad if you're going for 100% quests. Mineral gathering and Citadel fetch-quests are particularly heinous.

Look, ME 2 has its faults and they did oversimplify a bit, but for pure cinematic story telling, excellently written characters and an amazing job at tying in actions you took in the first game, both big and small, you would be a fool to return it without giving it a decent go. Even 3 hours is just scratching the surface of this excellent game. Comparing it to Gears of War is completely retarded. Sure its not really an RPG, its an action game with a story, but what a story.
@ Edit : And yes, there are less side quests but each one is handcrafted with a unique map rather than being the same base map recycled again and again just with boxes in different places.

Mass Effect 2 is the first game in several years that I've played from start to finish. I haven't even technically finished Dragon Age: Origins, and I freakin' loved that one.
I know there was a lot of whining and bitching from the fanbase about They Changed It Now It Sucks but I think if you can play the game for what it is instead of comparing it to the first one, you will enjoy it. The writing is top notch and the gameplay is excellent.

Another thing: The writing and characters may be top notch, but when 80% of your quests are side missions to help your parties general mood...that's not amazing storytelling. That's having the ability to take a piece of shit and spice it up with sprinkles and saying it's brilliant shit. Again, unless there's something amazing waiting for me in the last 3rd of the game I stick by my statement that Bioware doesn't know how to make sequels properly.

Personally I like Mass Effect 2's action and overall writing, Mordin makes me fall over at some of his manic ranting. On the other hand, ME1 is much more of an RPG, since you can actually modify your armor and weapons beyond "There's 3 Assault Rifles, pick one" and "Upgrade your armor with random crap you scanned off a planet!"
