What years were the best as far as video game releases, and/or your fondest memories?
For me
#1....1990 Games like Crystalis, Final Fantasy, Destiny of an Emperor, Castlevania 3, Startropics and many other great games came out right around that time. Also, I just got my NES right around the end of '89.
#2....1994 Some of the best games for the SNES like Super Metriod, Final Fantasy III (VI), Breath of Fire, DKC, Illusion of Gaia, etc. Also, I think Secret of Mana came out in '93 but I didn't get it until the next year, and that's the only time I went through the entire game with a 2nd player.
#3....1992 That's when I got my SNES, so obviously I was pretty stoked. Zelda:LttP, Final Fantasy II (IV), and a whole shitload of other games. Need I say more.

I actually think 1994 is a good choice. This was also the year the PS1 came out in Japan, so the year is both the epitome of Nintendo Power in the video game industry, and also the first steps forward to a Sony-dominated video game-world.

A Link to the Past
Street Fighter II (Arcades)
Lemmings
Civilization
Neverwinter Nights
Super Mario World
That was a good fucking year.

Fixed. Also, no one year stands out to me in this regard.

1966
If you don't know, look it up. I would say this was the best and most important year for video games. Period.

Knyte, I thought things were conceptual in 1966 and delivered in 1968.

I didn't like 1966, then again my college years sucked in general.

Ralph Baer's work on the "Brown Box" started in 1966. So, in essence, that was the birth of home consoles.

I still think the video games in 1990 were better than in 1966.
