There's more than one Green Lantern. The one in the movie is the ostensibly best known Lantern, Hal Jordan. There's also Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, and the African American Lantern you're referring to, John Stewart.

Alan Scott barely counts, I don't care if his whole backstory is retconned now to make him an unofficial official Lantern, what kind of super hero is weak to wood?
On a side note, it's disappointing that the movie was so fucking terrible because the War of Light storyline in the comics is pretty cool and would have made good sequels sections.
