today, 15 years ago the N64 was released to a bunch of nintendo fanboys. SM64 was one of the launch titles and immediately showed that the N64 could compete w/the PSX & the other crap that was out there
Quote:
After being released during June of the same year in Japan, Nintendo brought the Nintendo 64 to North America on September 29, 1996. It was the company's third videogame console following the Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Although it was during this generation that Nintendo lost its foothold as top dog to Sony and the PlayStation, the N64 is still fondly remembered for being home to some of the most significant and beloved games of all time.
It was actually more than a year earlier that development of the system was complete -- Nintendo of America announced on May 5, 1995 that Nintendo and Silicon Graphics, Inc. had completed development of the final chipset for what was then being referred to as the Nintendo Ultra 64. (Previously it was referred to as Project Reality.) It planned to unveil the system at an event that November in Japan (as opposed to E3, taking place days after the May announcement), adding that its release was planned for April of 1996 in North America.
although i did receive Mario 64 as my first game, i did have a blast playing Pilotwings 64 as well. then came the sports games (NFL quarterback club, Kobe's NBA something or other) and the party games (mario party, smash bros)
i think smash bros & goldeneye (soon followed by Perfect Dark) were the games that were played the most on my system. simply cuz more people could play at the same time.

Ah, the good old Nintendo 64. I remember I got it on launch day and played it for hours and then let my brother play for a bit. When he didn't stop playing I unplugged the console and threw it against the wall (stone) really hard and the only damage was a slightly chipped 3rd player controller port, which still worked. They really don't make stuff as solid as that anymore.
Happy birthday N64!

I think the 64 is probably my favorite system I ever owned. It didn't have a huge library but the stuff it had I loved the hell out of. The controller wasn't perfect but as a kid I never noticed that, it wasn't until I went back and played it a few years later that I realized that it was kinda uncomfortable to use. Still, 15 years wow, can't believe it has been that long. Maybe I'll hook it up and play some Perfect Dark or Banjo-Kazooie this weekend.

Happy Birthday N64! You had my two favorite games (both Zeldas). I wish I hadn't lost my OoT cartridge, though
But since I already have it hooked up to my TV, I might play some Zelda MM.
No Mercy,WCW Revenge,Goldeneye,Mario Kart 64,Perfect Dark,Smash Bros,Wave Race 64,Star Fox 64,Battle Tanx 64,NFL Blitz. This was the ultimate multiplayer console.

Yea, all the wrestling games are just fantastic.
I was talking about this in IRC last night, but Blast Corps was so much fun for me back in the day. A few other games I loved the shit out of were all early launch titles like Cruisin' USA, Killer Instinct Gold and Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.
Funny. I can relate to that. I never even got an N64. 15 years ago was when I pretty much lost interest in the 'new' games. Of course I was 19 then, which makes me.............FUCK!

The N64 has a few really awesome games, and a few decent ones, but in terms of quantity of worthwhile games, I feel the console is Nintendos weakest, and its not really surprising that it was the start of Nintendos downfall for Sony. However, Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, and my favorite Zelda-game of all time, Majora's Mask makes a bit up for what the N64 lacks in quantity. Happy birthday N64!

How many N64 game names ended with 64? We get it. It's a 64 bit machine.

Happy Birthday. Ahh, the nostalgia. I remember getting an N64 when I was little. It was Christmas of 1998. I was 5. Now, for months I was obsessed with it because I watched my cousin David (who died recently, so it's even more special to me as it's one of my memories of him) play Super Mario 64, and I was amazed because it was 3D and you could actually move around instead of going from left to right or moving in a top down view. Well, that Christmas, I opened one of my presents and to my surprise, it was a Nintendo freaking 64! That was my absolute favorite thing back in the day, with games like Ocarina Of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., Yoshi's Story, Donkey Kong 64, Banjo-Kazooie, etc., all the way until I was 10 and got a GameCube, when I stupidly abandoned my 64 for the new thing like the retarded 10 year old I was (don't get my wrong, I love the GameCube). Thank god my little brother got a 64 for 10 dollars at a yard sale. I wish I still had my old games, though.
Didn't care for this system at all, and I don't care for you calling the Sega Saturn "the other crap". How dare you!!!

I owned a Saturn and loved it, but that doesn't change the fact that 60% of it's library was garbage.
And honestly, it's close to that for the 64 too. But that 40% really shines for both systems.

Of the like 290+ titles relased in America I can't think of 120 that really shine for N64. Seems like we need another list.

There was supposed to be a Genesis list that was supposed to come out a few months ago.

Haha, astonishing coincidence that this was also from 1998. I love that video. No, that's not me.
