So I've had so much with Atlus's Catherine, I decided I want to get into the Persona series. I've heard a bunch of you rave about it, so I've decided to pick up Persona 2-4 for my PS2.
Quick question: There are TWO versions of Persona 3, apparently. Do I need them both, or just FES?

FES is the upgraded version and the only one you need.

In Detail what FES has what the first Persona 3 didn't have:
- More Personas (those are the Monsters you fight with)
- A Short Sequel Game called the Answer
- New Social Links plus it's easier to complete them
- A Weapon Fusion System
- A Hard Mode
- Moar Cut-Scenes
Thats about it i think...not sure though. The game is pure win. One of the best RPG's.

Get the PSP version if you have one. Also, if you get FES, you can skip The Answer. Its plot will infuriate you. It's so bad that the PSP port includes a gender-swap of the main story instead of The Answer and it's much better off for it.

I do not have a PSP. I've heard Vincent is in the PSP version, though.

The PSP version is basically the original game stripped down to its bare essentials with all of the refinements of Persona 4 mixed in. It's a much more streamlined experience and I don't think anyone misses walking your character around the map.

Can you control your characters in FES like can be done in Persona 4?

Not in FES, but in P3P.

I only heard a lot of complaints about The Answer. I should try and finish it someday, though the story seems really retarded and not nearly as deep and well developed as the plot of The Journy. After playing 100+ hours Persona 3 i wasn't quite in the mood to play The Answer anyway. The best thing about Persona 3 are the Characters. You gotta love them, each in their own way.

The Answer was intended to resolve ambiguous plot points from the main game, but it does so in ways that make you wish they didn't. I won't spoil much, but I can say that regardless of what you thought of Yukari by the end of the main game, I guarantee you will despise her by the end of The Answer.

Is it even worth picking up P2 if it's the second half of a full game?

Actually there are two different Persona 2 games, which form a duology. However, each game takes place after the previous one, but the casts are entirely new. Usually all playing the previous one serves is catching on to references to the prior games (like P4's Egypt-loving History teacher being related to P3's Japan-loving History teacher, or coming across P4's Miss Kashiwagi on the beach in P3).
Anyway,
* Persona 2: Innocent Sin originally never came out here on the PSX in '99, but was remade for PSP this year.
* Persona 2: Eternal Punishment is the 2nd half which came out over here in '00.
