Chris Staniforth, a 20-year-old from Sheffield, England, may have died as a result of his propensity for playing videogames for very long stretches of time.
Staniforth, who died in May according to the New York Daily News, was the victim of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The Mayo Clinic website describes DVT as a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, oftentimes in the legs, which can then break off and make its way into the lungs, causing a fatal pulmonary embolism. This doesn't always happen, and the clots can go away on their own. They're typically caused by sitting still for long stretches of time, like during long flights or drives. In the case of Staniforth, it may have been the long stretches he played videogames for that caused him to develop DVT.
"Chris lived for his Xbox. When he got into a game he could play it for hours and hours on end, sometimes 12 hours in a stretch," said his father, David Staniforth, in an interview with The Sun. "He got sucked in playing Halo online against people from all over the world."
"I'm not for one minute blaming the manufacturer of Xbox. It isn't their fault that people use them for so long. But I want to highlight the dangers that can arise. Playing on it for so long is what killed him -- and I don't want another child to die." |

Heh I remember playing Harvest Moon 64 for nearly 20 hours straight one time, but I at least got up to take a piss or grab a drink once in a while.

I can never fall asleep playing a video game, ever. Or maybe I don't stay up late enough. I usually just stop playing after I get too tired.

Meh, that stuff has happened before. Remember that one Korean who apparently died after playing WoW for several days straight?

Enough of those instances occured that there are now laws in place that limit how much time you can spend playing online games. The soon-to-release Korean MMO action game Rusty hearts has a "Stamina" meter that when it empties you can continue to fight monsters but gain no XP, progress no further in quests, and gain no loot. One reviewer said that the amount is good for maybe 3-4 solid adventures at once, then he had to wait for two days to renew his Stamina.

I'm not sure. I do know that if you party up, everyone is effectively reduced to the lowest stamina around. So if you've been playing for a while in a single day, no one's going to team up with you because they want XP/quests/items.

Man, I wonder what would happen if Blizzard did that to WoW. Wouldn't that piss a lot of people off?
