Nintendo of Japan has been quite generous to victims of the Japanese earthquake and subsequent tsunami that occurred this March to the tune of $3.6 million. Nintendo has been mum on the subject of other such donations, detailing that they did not feel that they should show their actions off to the world, and have a policy of not involving the media. A member of the Japanese Hachimaki Blog has posted what some of those donations were.

Nintendo has donated a number of DSi units with the DS Terebi attachment included with the system. The DS Terebi is a TV tuner capable of receiving 1seg television broadcasts, enabling the quake victims quick access to local news broadcasts.

It’s great to see big companies like Nintendo still giving the the victims in their home country. Hopefully they feel generous enough to give a little to foreign countries as well.

They could really use some good publicity right now in light of their recent business decisions.

Though a grim subject, it's interesting reading up on Japan's history of natural disaster, from the melding of classes in refugee camps (interesting especially for feudal times), to the emergence of mythology such as the Namazu, or most especially, relief efforts. Whether or not through any altruism or self-service, companies and criminal organizations tend to just give (though the Yakuza obviously do it for self-serving land grabs and popular support), and due to either business practices, respect for the suffering, or modesty, these entities rarely tout their contributions.

It's definitely a cool way of using their product to help others.

There's a peripheral that lets you watch TV on a DSi?

About a month or so ago, a deranged shareholder got up at the Nintendo shareholder's meeting in Japan, told Iwata that he didn't play video games, that he only bought Nintendo stock because it was doing well, and demanded that they supply people in relief centers with Wii Fit, because it would be good for PR. You know, because when someone just lost everything, the first thing they want to do is some step aerobics.

Iwata responded that Nintendo was already contributing to the relief effort and that their efforts would not be disclosed at that time because they weren't doing it for easy PR.

I like it that Nintendo is caring for the victims of that earthquake and tsunami.
