This year, Dragon Quest will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The very first game in the series, Dragon Quest (also known as Dragon Warrior in North America for a long period of time), was released in 1986. To commemorate the occasion, Square Enix will be releasing an anniversary collection in Japan similar to the Super Mario All-Stars collection Nintendo released on Wii last year.
According to Joystiq, the collection carries a fairly lengthy (but descriptive!) title: Dragon Quest 25th Anniversary Famicom & Super Famicom Dragon Quest I, II, III. In case it's not apparent from the title, the bundle will include both the NES (Famicom) and SNES (Super Famicom) versions of each of the first three DQ games.
The anniversary collection will be out in Japan this September; there's been no word as of yet about a possible international release. DQ is far more popular in Japan than it is in North America, but hopefully that won't stop Square Enix from bringing it here -- none of the titles are available on the Virtual Console, nor are they available on any modern platforms. Don't count on any sort of extras being included in the collection -- we'd just settle for a localized version. |

I would LOVE to see this get localized. Not holding my breath though.

Pretty much in the same boat as Syd. It'd be nice, but I doubt we'll get it.

The biggest problem is that they'd have to localize the SNES versions of the game, which takes money and time, and it probably takes more money and time than it's worth.

Well, Dragon Quest is a much more successful brand in Japan than Final Fantasy, and Enix has been pushing lately to establish DQ as an international force. Hence, they did release those DS remakes of DQ 4-6. I could see them potentially releasing this to help promote brand awareness, and hype people up for the still forthcoming Dragon Quest X, which will be a Wii exclusive.

Yeah, I am pretty sure this will come. The games are already localized, so it won't be a huge deal for them to repackage them and sell them in the west. Also, I really want it.

Dragon Quest 3 on the GBC is one of my favorite games of all time. I certainly hope we get a translation.

The GBC versions of the first few games are simply redone versions of the Super Famicom ones.

Yeah, this is what I have heard as well, which is why I wrote what I wrote. The Super Famicom games might be somewhat different, but I think they were pretty shody ports even for that time, which makes the GBC-games look like Nes-ports rather than SF-ports.

thats what i presumed. thats why i was contradicting you. they definitely DO NOT look like Super Famicom ports.

Yeah, I agree with you on that Wikipedia says they are based on the SF-versions though. Anyways, lets hope this is west-bound. I think the chances are fairly good since Nintendo have made a point of making the series popular in the west, and this collection will help spur interest in the franchise before the release of DQX.

If you've recently hit the lottery or simply don't want to spend your savings on outdoor activities or helping make the world a better place, Square Enix has just the item for you -- a full-sized treasure chest, just like the ones you've opened dozens of in the Dragon Quest games.
Measuring nearly three feet high and two feet across, the chest (emblazoned with the DQ mark right in the clasp bit) is made out of real wood and is filled up with slime plushes and other DQ goods inside. Originally sold alongside Dragon Quest III in 1988, the new treasure chest (released to commemorate the new Wii collection announced a couple weeks back) can be yours for a scant 365,400 yen, or about $4452.
If that price somehow didn't scare you off, you can go see the chest for yourself later on this week at the Square Enix Character Goods Shop Show Case, located in the Shibuya area of Tokyo. Make sure to bring a servant or apprentice to carry it home for you. |

I'm thinking because it got a relatively recent release on the DS.

Plus, the original three are a trilogy.
And honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the episodic nature of IV.

Agreed, it was dumb.
Plus, no Dragon Quest game still has the ability to pull me in like III does. None of the sequels, and none of the games before it even come close.

I don't know about that, VIII was pretty good. The presence of voice acting didn't hurt it either.
Though this does lead me to wonder on the status of a US release of X on the Wii. The game is due for release in Japan next year. Anyone have an idea how long Wii's going to still get support prior to Project Cafe?
