So, I got a new car recently and we've been looking to prune down our cable service for a bit anyhow since we were paying 130 and change a month for premium tiers. I went into Cox yesterday to turn our DVR box thingamajig in and inquired about what it would cost just to get internet and the local channels. Apparently, they wanted to charge 30$ for ten local channels. 30$! So I told them to stick that figure and get rid of the cable completely. Has anyone else gone just internet recently, and has it worked for you?

I did cut out my premium channels in lieu of a Netflix Subscription. I fucking hate paying so much for cable, but there are a few channels I just have to have like Red Sox Channel for example.
I read an article the other day about how a lot of people are opting to use old school antenna to grab free channel signals. Apparently there is more free stuff than you would think.

I got Dish Network. It's cheap and gives a good selection of stuff. I don't need premium stuff.
I get my internet through the phone company.

I stopped watching cable when I moved out of my mother's house years ago, I never saw the point in paying that much for it when I don't like 80% of what's on. It's all internet and redbox for me. (this does leave me behind the times if I miss a major movie in the theater release though...)

I can live without cable as long as I have internet. Not much on cable that I watch anyway. The occasional Family Guy/South Park rerun and Warehouse 13. All of which I can find online if I take the time to find it. My school gives me free cable with free HBO so I do catch movies every now and again too, but I really only use my TV for the 360.

Ya, I just use Netflix.
Also, I get free Dish Network because my roomie works for them, but if I didn't get it for free, I wouldn't bother.

Yeah, cable is really old school these days and as they are losing customers by the handful, have to charge extortionate prices to remain in business.
You're better off joining the rest of us in 2010 and going satellite be it Dish or DirecTV. Some of their packages are pretty affordable and you can usually pick and choose exactly what you want.
And yeah, as others have said, if you have loose morals you can get anything you want online if you look hard enough and are patient enough.

In my area there are no ISP alternatives other than Comcast that can give more than 3Mb/s connections. At 16Mb/s I can do all the things I need without cable, but there is a 250GB bandwidth cap. Comcast from a business standpoint made a wise choice to put that cap there because it most certainly keeps me in Cable. However, the minute that I have the option of a Fiber connection from Verizon, AT&T, RCN, etc... I am gone as a customer and will most likely reduce my cable and go with Netflix.

Yeah, but he's an X-Man, which means he'll be back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back. And, then die again. And, then come back...
You get the idea.
Back to OP topic:
If it wasn't for Comcast's 250GB/Month limit on internet, I would consider ditching Cable TV. However, with the amount of shows I enjoy, and being a stickler for HD, I fear I would hit that limit far too often. Between HD show downloads, internet gaming, and hosting my Minecraft server.

Nice. What color? Is it an SS? I wanted to get one of the yellow ss ones back in early '02 but chickened out.
I dumped Cable last year and haven't looked back. I hate reality tv and pretty much everything on the the history channel since they stopped showing history programming. Streaming tv on the internet is so much better than the alternative.

It's silver, not an SS. The stereo system is really retarded. Super awesome.

I personally would prefer Cable at this point. It's slightly cheaper then what I have now through Dish Network and far less crappy channels I never watch. Plus the features are a lot better. Instant skip commercials, you can rewind a show that is currently playing, the free on demand movies. Dish is getting the boot once the contract is up. Plus my dish goes out at least 2 times a month.

The school provides me with cable cut down from a DirectTV signal, and when there is a storm we lose cable in all the townhouses lol. Not that it matters because nothing is ever on the damn thing worth watching. Every time I check the guide there is nothing but crappy movies on the three HBO channels and they are never showing episodes of South Park or Family Guy I haven't seen a ton of times. Though that Ancient Aliens thing on History was decent enough that I could watch it for a bit.

Comcast and Dish were just as bad with us. It's probably where we live, but... still.
