The First Official Shot Of The PSP2
While the PSP2 is not yet official, there have been fan Photoshop creations. Apparently, this is not a fan-made creation. Apparently, this is a Sony-made one.
This week Sony is expected to unveil the new PlayStation Portable, which is currently being called the PSP2. As the reveal approaches, this art work surfaced online today.
The photo features a handheld believed to be the PSP2, which has a PSPgo style sliding shell. There is a 32 GB SD memory card as well, plus a "PSP2" memory stick. There is a long, thin stylus as well.
Unlike the current PSP, there are two analog nubs, giving this handheld a controller layout similar to the PS3.
Whether or not it is real, won't be known for sure if and when the rumored PSP2 is finally made public. However, Kotaku is reaching out to Sony and will update this post should the company comment.
That looks like the PSPgo with just an additional analog stick... I love my PSP as much as I love my DS but damnit, there isn't any support for the PSP anymore.
It never will, and the move to an iPod-esque system where there is no physical cartridge, disk or stick, has to be one of the worse moves ever. But that doesn't mean I don't like using my PSP for the long trips where I want to play Portable ops or the persona games, or even my classic PSOne games that I bought off of the network.

Guess who finally bought a PSP two or three months ago?
If the PSP2 will drop the UMD or any other physical format, it will be the worst move Sony could make with the new hardware. They've been known for their past mistakes, however, so I'm fully bracing for impact.
OH WAIT, I'M NOT. I'm getting a 3DS! Phew, for a second there I thought I was in for a massive disappointment.
Sony is holding a press event in Japan this week, and while they won't tell us what it's about, it is more or less confirmed that they will be officially unveiling the PSP2.
Join us on Wednesday, January 26 at 10:00 pm Pacific time for our live coverage of the event and be among the first to hear what Sony's got up its sleeve!
This thing, like the 3ds, will be made or broken by games that are released. 3g and fancy graphics, and with the ds 3D, are nice but if the games aren't fun it worthless.
Once again, Sony is aheld of Nintendo's nextgen portable on raw power, but behind in innovation. The NGP is basically just a more powerful PSP. It's Stummies, only bigger, and there have been a few flipper babies.
NGP is promising portable versions of Call of Duty and Uncharted. And while Call of Duty will likely be a big seller, Uncharted isn't a good portable title. The whole point of a portable device is that it's portable. You need a game that you can shut off at any moment and not be annoyed or frustrated that you'll have to retread when you have to do so. Sony, in essence, wants to design a console for your hands. I'm going to sit in my room and play CoD for 4 hours, I'd rather do it on a console than a handheld. Also, keep in mind that studies show that CoD players are among the most frugal of gamers, rarely buying new titles other than the newest CoD. So Sony's ability to attract CoD players to an expensive new system is questionable.
Keep in mind also that Sony is significantly upping production costs for handheld games. The Nintendo handheld market has long been the place where companies make back their money on risky big budget console titles, because the Nintendo handhelds are less powerful and require less resources to develop for. The 3DS will potentially still allow this. With 3D remakes of MGS3, OoT, and Star Fox 64 announced, except to see more companies making bank with 3D remakes of their classics. The iPhone is also becoming an increasingly attractive platform for game developers. The iPhone currently has a higher share of the handheld market than PSP. In March 2010, Nintendo had 70% of the handheld market, iPhone had 19% and PSP had 11%. I can't find more recent numbers, but I imagine, sadly, that iPhone is higher and Nintendo and Sony are lower.
Sony is also in a tough position. Back when the PSP launched, Sony was the market leader in the console wars with the PS2, and they were winning by a large margin. Their foray into portable gaming made logical business sense, and developers, fat off all the sweet, sweet money they'd made off their PS2 games, lined up to make PSP games. But thing didn't go so great. And now, things aren't going great for Sony. They're #3 in the handheld wars and #3 in the console wars. Developers aren't as eager to develop for them. If Sony wants games on the NGP, they're probably going to have to subsidize them. Or beg like a little bitch. Or end up with libraries that rival the Sega CD and N64 in terms of breadth and quality.
And where's this 3G going to come from? You're probably going to pay for it, just like pay for Live or cell service. And 3G? Fucking 3G? 3G is two years old, and is not fast enough to sustain online gaming, especially not at the caliber that CoD players expect. It should have 4G. And hell, by the time this thing comes out, we'lll probably be on 5G.
Did anyone else see a lot of "NGP" news and think that the NeoGeo Pocket is making a comeback?
I'm not a bad enough dude, but I am an edgy little shit. I'll do what I can.

Image of the NGP/PSP2, just for the hell of it, even though most of us have already seen it by now:
I gotta admit I'm not as hyped for this as I am for the 3DS and I can understand the relative apathy here for the system, though I think it looks sexy and might buy this in a year or two when there will be probably be a better version. I like the OLED screen, the dual analogs, back touch pad and no more battery killing UMD (it uses a cart media that looks like DS carts.) The 3G will be good for the people who want to Monster Hunter online on the go, but thankfully there's another SKU with just the wi-fi.
However, hardly any games were revealed, and I'll wait 'til E3 to make a real decision. Here's hoping they're just not a bunch of PS360 ports.
Also, price predictions? I'm betting at base this won't be less than $300.
Sony explicitly mentioned Call of Duty and Uncharted as NGP titles, so we know that Activision and Sony are both onboard for Sony's new handheld. I'm pretty sure we can pencil in EA as well. EA has never met a platform that they wouldn't port to.

Well they have an autosave feature in Uncharted so I would imagine there would be a similar feature. I've turned off Uncharted 2 in the middle of a huge fight, and ended up starting mere seconds behind where I was on several occasions.
I would also imagine it will have wireless capabilities as well as 3G, but if you wan't to play CoD while on a roadtrip 3G would be the ideal use because it has the most coverage nation wide. We don't even have 4G offerings in my area and my 3G used to power my laptop when my Droid was rooted. I was able to download torrents at around 150 KB/s.
Regardless I don't think they are going to make the same mistakes with the PSP, and I would also go as far to say to say that they have more publishers then they have announced, without publishers you have no reason nor financial future to release a system.
I could just be spouting nonsense being that I haven't really looked into the NGP but most companies in any market rarely release a second product when the first one fails to meet expectations or produce a profit unless there is a substantial plan in place to fortify a successful venture.
Douche, there are almost certainly other devs onboard, such as Square Enix, but you never know. When an industry giant develops hardware, they generally ASSUME that devs will jump onboard, and it doesn't always happen. Some of the greatest failures of our time, such as the N64, were failures because devs never materialized.
