Keys are so last century. Hack your door to lock and unlock via text messages.

Billy Chasen wanted to ditch his keys and control the door to his office via text messaging. He built a simple device which consists of a tiny web server, a servo motor, and some parts from Home Depot. The end product, although a bit hacked together looking for lack of a case covering up the guts, has total control over the locking mechanism of the door. He can lock and unlock the door, add people to a whitelist to grant access to coworkers, and otherwise modify the door control by modifying the tiny embedded web server.

seems like a lot of work for something simple. superfluous even.

what happens if his cel phone provider is down? or if his power goes out?

So you have to stand at the door, thumb type out a text, hit send and wait? Screw that give me a key. Rolling Eyes

My old phone you could save texts that all you had to do was give the number/reply and hit the hotkey and it would send that person the prewritten message. Like I could save, "Hey I'm working right now I'll text you later," and all I had to do was memorize the hotkey sequence and I didn't even have to pull my phone out at work and risk getting caught.

Yeah but still, seems like it's being over thunk. Sure I could rig my toilet to flush when I text it, but do I need to?

Seriously if you figure out how to do that let me know, my brother needs that desperately. The boy never flushes the fucking toilet, maybe if he could flush from the couch he might be more willing to do so when he realizes he forgot again lol.

I have a request for Book III, but it's so closely related to this topic, I'd rather not make a new topic just for that. Basically, I would just like to be able to type in a number, and get that number on the padlock. That way, the problem with accidentally scrolling past it is solved.
