Servotron - Indie rock from Georgia - they are an interesting band, the whole set up is based around the idea that they are robots who are trying to destroy humanity by the usage of popular music, it's quite amusing.
Man or Astro-man? - Surf Rock/Indie Rock/Space Rock from Alabama, these guys are like Servotron but they are Aliens from space - it's also quite amusing

Queensryche - Progressive Metal band from Seattle, best known for their concept albums Operation: Mindcrime (1988) and Empire (1990).
Against Me, a punk/pop punk band from Gainesville, Florida:
Stan Ridgway, former lead singer of Wall of Voodoo. His music is primarily a mix of New Wave and Country Western:

The For Carnation- Math rock/slowcore outfit from Louisville KY
Throbbing Gristle- legendary noise/industrial (as in, pretty much the first one) band from England
Beirut- the lead singer's main instrument is a ukelele, nuff said
James Chance and the Contortions- punk/jazz band from No Wave era NY
Joy Division- seriously, who hasn't heard of Joy Division? If it's you, listen, then kill yourself

I've got some more:
Tomahawk: Alt Metal/Experimental, Supergroup starring Mike Patton (Faith No More), Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard), John Stanier (Helmet) and Kevin Rutamis (Cows/Melvins).
Cows: Noise Rock/Punk Blues - from Minneapolis. Extremely underrated and really noisy. First song is off Compliation "Dope, Guns and Fucking in the streets" Vol 3 (i think its 3), the second is off Cunning Stunts (way before the Metallica Cunning Stunts).
Jesus Lizard - Noise Rock from Illinois. Check out Puss as well it's great too.
Melvins - Sludge Metal/Stoner Rock/Experimental from Washington (Seattle), earlier stuff is more slow off Gluey Porch Treatments and 26 songs (and maybe Bullhead, Boris especially).
Eels - Indie Rock/Alt Rock from California. Really upbeat at times and really depressing at times. This one is upbeat:

Scratch Acid - Really excellent Post-Hardcore/Noise band from the eighties.
Malfunkshun - Early Grunge band that evolved into Mother Love Bone, who evolved into Pearl Jam. Sometimes pretty glammy, sometimes really heavy. Great stuff.
Government Issue - Probably the second-best (Next to Minor Threat) of the D.C. Hardcore bands.
Guided by Voices - Indie Rock band from the nineties. Kind of remind me of the Velvet Underground at times.
Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet - Bitchin' Canadian(!), kinda surfy instrumental band. Best known for doing the theme song to Kids in the Hall.
Wolf Parade - The bestestest Indie Pop band ever. If you dislike them, I give you a stern thumbs down.

RJD2, DJ from Ohio, Does a perfect blend of Hip-Hop/Expiremental
Sky Eats Airplane, pretty good hardcore/nintendocore band from Texas
Transplants, Travis Barker and Tim Armstrong's side project, one of those bands that spend all day trying to classify what genre they are, I simple call them good music.
The Human Abstract, same genre deal with Transplants, still pretty good.
The Dillenger Escape Plan, this band in paticular kind of annoys me because this song is beautiful and very much how they typically make music, but if they just kept this style I would be more a fan of them. Idc through, still a good track,

Ohohohohoho, I am glad this thread exists! I love recommending music.
Let's start with some simple stuff:
A Place to Bury Strangers is, in my opinion, a shoegaze band for people who hate shoegaze; I personally can't stand shoegaze becuase of the tinnitus-inducing feedback that comes with the majority of bands in the genre, but APTBS actually uses their feedback as a contribution to the music rather than just an assault on their audience. Plus, the band has some flat-out badass songwriting, and every time I hear one of their songs I feel like I'm walking on water. "To Fix The Gash In Your Head" is easily my favorite song to dance to, and is probably in my top five best songs of all time.
I looooooove Zola Jesus. My favorite vocalist ever. Most of her stuff is a lot darker than "Sea Talk", but it's one of my favorite songs by her, not only because of her voice, but because the song has one of those iconic choruses that defines the moment you hear it for the first time. I guess I'd describe her stuff as "dark synth" or "noise pop".
Of course I always recommend Crystal Castles.
And I'll end this post with Swans, just for the heck of it.

Speaking of rap, I've recently rekindled my interest in classic rap, particularly that of a cartoon cat rapper named MC Skat Kat, best known for his co-singing with Paula Abdul in "Opposites Attract". They later made a separate album for him consisting of rap music that was catchy yet clean.
This was basically the flagship song of the album as well as the most requested music video on MTV back in 1991; "Skat Strut":
The only other music video they made was for the song "Big Time" but it was never released to the public. This excerpt is all that's been shown as of today:

It's a shame MC Skat Kat never really caught on. They had planned on making more music videos for him as well as a Who-Framed-Roger-Rabbit-esque movie. *sigh* What could've been...

A Tribe called Quest - Alt Hip Hop/Jazz Rap - i would be surprised if a lot of the forum users here hadn't heard this before.

Public Enemy - Hip Hop - usually very politically infused or dealing with issues.
Dalek - Alt Hip Hop, that's all i can really describe it as, bit of noise in this one.
Skeriks Syncopated Taint Septet - Punk Jazz - it's not the best quality but the first time i heard that i was hooked.

The Meters - Hard Funk.
Gil Scott-Heron - Did mainly Soul and Spoken Word type stuff, pretty political generally.
Oh! Oh! Uhh, Le District Ouest - Apparently they're some Québécois band, or something? This is the only song of theirs I've ever heard. The Evaporators covered it in English, and had the original as a hidden track at the end of the CD of that album, which was so conveniently packaged inside the sleeve of the vinyl version. This song, however, is incredibly cool.
Furnaceface - They were a big Indie/Punk band in Canada, in the '90s.
EDIT: Oh, yeah, on Public Enemy: I heard Terminator X works an ostrich farm, nowadays. That's magical.

After seeing Scott Pilgrim I really got into Metric and have been listening to them consistently since then. They are an indie band from Toronto. Lead singer Emily Haines has an amazing voice.
Here is one of their songs "Gimme Sympathy" from their latest album "Fantasies."
