I couldn't find Xanga on the revised map. Xanga used to be king shit. Every couple of years I try to revive it but to no avail.

I've had a good look at the map (which is hard with a 1366x786 laptop screen due to all the scrolling), and all I could find that was Wikipedia related was an island for talk pages.

I am always blown away by how quickly Facebook and Twitter exploded onto the scene and instantly were the hottest, most popular social leviathans the internet has ever seen. Those two maps tell the whole story. Facebook and Twitter literally didn't exist one year, then became the two most dominant forces on the internet the next.
How the fuck does that happen?

Just as amazing is how quickly Myspace disappeared. People don't use that anymore, except maybe for music.
As for the map, it's fitting that 4Chan is in the shape of a penis, and look! Ejaculate.

Almost all good internet ideas explode and appear like Facebook and Twitter did. They hit the majority of people within a few months and either make it or fail.
What I find interesting is that companies that have made it, and there aren't that many, often times have a hard time extending their services into further success.
Microsoft is a huge example. They have the OS and Office products, but can't seem to make headway with search or other internet based products. Google has search and email, but can't seem to get into social networking. Facebook has social networking, but can't seem to be more than that.
All of these companies have seemingly peeked with their largest offerings. The question is, where will the next new thing come from.
I really wish I had an idea that could be it.

I didn't even notice it until you mentioned it. Very funny.

Me too. I thought I did with GameMarathons, but it turns out most people don't find it all that exciting to watch other people play video games.
Sometimes I think the people behind Facebook, Twitter, and other come-out-of-nowhere explosive companies made deals with the devil to achieve that success. It's all too sudden and suspicious to me.

I guess that Facebook and Twitter just got popular due to word of mouth. Facebook is used a lot by high school aged people, which explains a lot of it's usage, I'm sure you can guess why. Then there's the media, the amount of people with Internet access.
I guess it spreads like seasonal flu. Except for a much longer time period.
