Interview with Prince (the musician)
| Quote: |
He (Prince) explains that he decided the album (20TEN) will be released in CD format only in the Mirror. There'll be no downloads anywhere in the world because of his ongoing battles against internet abuses.
Unlike most other rock stars, he has banned YouTube and iTunes from using any of his music and has even closed down his own official website.
He says: "The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.
"The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good.
"They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you." |

He probably hasn't left his giant creepy purple house in years. He's out of touch and his opinion is irrelevant.

Never been a fan, anyway. He looks like a pedofile, too.....but I guess no one calls him on it because he's Prince.

Oh, Prince. You're silly. He just doesn't want to make piracy exceptionally easy.

I don't think selling it on CD makes it any harder to pirate than selling it on iTunes. It'll still be up on fifty torrent sites the day it comes out.

I think a more accurate analogy would have been "The internet's like Prince..."

Comparing the Internet to MTV doesn't really jive, you never had access to more porn than is humanly possibly to watch on MTV...

Is it possible to make a CD that doesn't allow piracy?

I'm sure they could make a CD that has prevention stuff. I know some DVD's do. But I'm also pretty sure people could find a way around that. If nothing else, you could just hook up your stereo and use its outputs; nothing they can do to stop that.

He's just going to alienate the few fans he has left. Hasn't he learned yet? Pirating music is the American way...

yeah pretty much, the man should take a page out of Trent Reznors book
I think I'm just going to download all my music now and if I like it enough I can cut a $5 cheque to each artist involved with a note "thx for the beautiful music "

Let's assume it's a mixture of the two!

Interesting observation... since who was Princes music rival?
Michael Jackson..
Who was convicted of being a pedophile.
You're onto something!

The Real World is pretty much soft porn at this point.

At this time no one has made a CD with music on it impossible to copy. I am sure it is possible, but it won't be done.
I will say, it has been tried.

Velvet Revolver had it on their first album. Caught so much flack that their second album did not have it.

That sounds like your grandmother explaining the internet as she knows it. "It's all numbers and no good for your brain! You'll go blind!"
And yeah, releasing it only on CD doesn't mean it won't be available everywhere as soon as somebody copies to their hard drive.

lets not forget the pitifully small amount of money hell actually earn for it even if its wildly successful. most artists make their money on ringtones concert ticket sales and merchandising

Indeed. If there was anyone who had the intellect and vision to have done that it should have have Prince. I cant seem to find any references to it online, but thats due in no small part to the fact that I cant be fucked at the moment. I am talking of course, about the wierd ass exploromafuck game that he released on cd some time in the late 90's or something. It was basically a point and click style game set in a Princed out virtual environment. You could explore different rooms and the objects within them, which were interactive, but cryptic in terms of the explaination of thier use. They'd often be tied in with some kind of musical application.. It lent a puzzler element to the already puzzling surroundings.
More to the point though.. If he was ok with exploring the digitalization of media then, or rather even doing so actively, what fucking good is it going to do him shitting his pants about it now? Now, in 2010 as he's so poignantly referenced, when the data stream is basically unstoppable?
You were a smarter man than that, unpronouncable symbol.
