By now I am sure most of you have heard about the official 3DS debut today and it's megaton launch title, Kid Icarus: Uprising.
This game is supposed to simultaneously usher in the era of the 3DS while re-booting the Kid Icarus franchise. Although not much is known about the game, it looks impressive.
So basically this is a 3DS exclusive? Well I guess I won't be buying it then. I got turned off by handheld systems when Gameboy made like 4 upgrades in around 4 years, it was absolutely ridiculous. The music sounds like something out of a late 1970's TV show.
Here's the problem I have; if I had a DS, it makes it drop to like $20 over night. If they allowed for some sort of trade in, then I would be more for it, however Nintendo had constantly redone the Game Boy since the mid 90's, I can't think of 2 years gone by where they hadn't modified it in some way. I was fine with my GameBoy the way it was, but then they released GameBoy Pocket, which was cool. So I was fine with that, then they release GameBoy Color, which was fucking awesome...so had to get that. Before long, GameBoy Advanced was the rage, and once again, I had to have it. Luckily, I held out and didn't get it, which was fine because Nintendo has produced about 4 other versions since then. If there is at least a 5 year plan for this 3DS, I MIGHT consider getting it, however I'd rather they just port all the games to Wii.

I kind of agree with you, Doddsino. I love my classic DS. It's sturdy, it took more abuse than Rambo in Vietnam and it never failed me. So when they released the Lite, I passed on that. Then there was the DSi, which I passed on as well, since it didn't have anything that stood out as interesting to me - and I still can't think of a single DSi exclusive. Then right away they released the DSi XL - and at that point I just said "fuck it" and went back to New Super Mario Bros.
I will, however, get the 3DS at the first opportunity. I just hope they won't release all sorts of new versions right after I buy it.
And hell, we're missing the point: IT'S KID ICARUS.
On that note, I bet I know why you didn't like Kid Icarus.
I now bestow upon you the title of Most Awesome Person.

Kid Icarus isn't a Metroid reskin. Metroid is an open world, Kid Icarus, aside from the castles, is extremely linear. And those are more Zelda than Metroid.
Speaking of which, you know what we didn't see in the trailer? Eggplant Wizard! I demand Eggplant Wizard, if only as a boss.
I think the main reason that people hated Kid Icarus, aside from that video, it that it was a locking scroller. Locking doesn't matter a whole lot in horizontal scrollers like SMB1, but in vertical scrollers, it's really annoying.
I don't know about this game; it looks somewhat like a crappier, gayer version of God of War III...if you can get gayer than a muscled, sweaty Spartan in a loin-cloth.

The 3DS is already designed similar to the DS Lite, I can't really see how they could redesign it any further from there.

As far as I know, there is exactly one game you can play on DSi that you can't play on an old DS, and it's crap. So really, what do you care?
The point of modified hardware is to increase the userbase, to get people who don't already have it to have and finally buy it. They're not doing it to screw with you.
Yes, but constantly rendering my old hardware obsolete just doesn't make me want to bother. As I said, if there was a trade in or I knew they weren't going to start phasing out my system, then I wouldn't have a problem. And it's only a couple of years before they release yet another improvement.

But it's not obsolete! If you can play 99.99999% of the games classified as DS games, how is it obsolete?

You could say that about any piece of technology, by that argument you should never buy a computer, a cell phone etc...Technology is constantly and exponentially progressing.

This, You could play games released for the DS last week on the same hardware that was released in 2004. The DS is a wonderful platform.
and the 3ds is backwards compatible w/the DS games iirc. or am i wrong there?

Because I have to upgrade in order to get the new games, that's a huge pain in the ass. And it's not like home consoles that happen respectively every 5 years, handheld systems seem to be constantly upgraded, that's a huge error IMO.

I thought that new kid Icarus was a wii game. I may have to get a 3ds for that and star fox.
On the gameboy shenanigans:
I owned the original gameboy, the original grey one, before they were even in colors. It was great for a few years. I skipped the pocket, because why would I need a pocket sized portable when I have a backpack for most of my school day? The screen was nicer, but not required.
I sold it to get a gameboy color, but only because it had some exclusive games. I almost skipped the GBA for the same reason dodds wants to skip the 3ds, but when the sp came out, the rechargeable battery and backlit screen were enough to convince me. It felt like exactly what a portable ge system was supposed to be. I skipped the upgraded sp models and the micro, because they felt pointless or even backwards in the vase of the micro.
With the ds generation, I feel that all these new models are fairly pointless. The ds lite was what the system should have been from the beginning, and I'm glad I held out to get a ds until it came around. It's been great to me, and I don't see a reason to get either dsi model. The added features just aren't that impressive.
I don't think of the 3ds as another ds. It seems more like the next generation, much like how gba wasn't just a remodeled gameboy.

It's obviously a "next-gen" handheld and is the true successor to the hardware they have been using since 2004. The visuals make this stunningly clear.
