I'm pretty sure I'm one of the youngest forum members here( and I use that term lightly since I come and go infrequently), but I just got back my PSAT scores and I got a 1480 combined math and reading( the only 2 parts that count) so I'm ecstatic. Anyone from their glorious high school days remember what they got?

It doesn't work that way here, so I'd like to know what it's supposed to mean.
Is it a score of 1480 on 2000?
And how old are you? I'm 17

Oh I'm sorry I thought the PSAT was a uniformal thing.
Ill break it down this way
The Old Version was only math and reading, each had a max of 800 thus the perfect score is 1600
The New Version includes a writing section worth an extra 800 points so a perfect score would be 2400
However, few schools, if any count the new writing section so I only count my math and reading score which combined is 1480.

I don't remember. I don't care to remember. I don't even think my college cared about test scores. In a theater magazine, my school was listed as having a 100% acceptance rate. Can't beat those odds.

I got a 1340, out of 1600.
I have to explain myself now when I say that, because they had to go off and change the scoring.

It's math and verbal, not reading. It's more about parts of speech and grammar than it is about basic comprehension. But I've heard they got rid of analogies, which is gay. Analogies were awesome.

Well I can't argue with that.
But back in my day, we called it Math and Verbal, and we didn't have no dadgum Writing section. 1600 was the highest score you get and there were cherry orchards as far as the eye could see! </old>

I took the LAST test where it based off of 1600, and tried to submit that to schools. Out of four, three of them asked me to re-take it for the writing portion. That may be because I'm an English major, but you'd be surprised how many schools really want you to have a good writing score.

That's true. While my school seems to ignore all the national tests, they do give their own. To test out of English Composition I, you need to get a 97% on the writing proficiency exam. The next highest is 60% for math and 40% for science... or something screwy like that. Very far results from 97.

I'm 16. I had the chance to take the PSAT, rare for sophmores at my school, but I decided not to. I guess I'm just a lazy asshole.

You should have taken it, it really does help or at least for me it does. I took it freshman and sophomore year and I got better every year because I already knew from past experiences what to avoid.

Our region uses ACT more than SAT, so I took the PLAN (pre-ACT) tests both freshman year, and this year. I can't remember my exact freshman score, but I did pretty damn well.

The PSAT doesn't really matter. I did almost 200 points better on the SATs than the PSAT's, and it certianly wasn't because I studied more or cared more. I know a lot of people that did markedly worse on their actually SATs as well. Basically...whatever. It's a test. If you test well you'll do fine. If not, you're fucked.

I took both the SAT and PSAT, I don't remember the Prep score but got a decent 1040 on my SATs (old school class of 2000 era like Syd had).

The SAT is largely a worthless dick waving contest that has no bearing on intelligence or anything whatsoever. I know complete morons who have gotten good scores, and intelligent people who have gotten bad ones. Oh, and for the record, I got a 1430 when I took the actual thing in my sophomore year (out of 1600).

I generally suck as a test taker (maybe it's the time limit thing, I don't know), but the SATs in any form weren't really enforced or encouraged as much as the ACTs. The biggest thing we had to endure every year were the Iowa Tests of Educational Development (which started as the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills in 3rd grade) and were taken every year from grade 3 until graduation. They would take a week in mid Feb. and not hold classes for the first half of the day, which is when you'd be taking the tests. Then it would still be a month and a half before you received your results (which were percentile ranks comparing how you did among your peers).
Then, my senior year they decided they needed to re-standardize it with fresh data, so after taking them for real, we took them again, only this time they did them all in a row instead of spreading it out over a week. So, an entire Monday and Tuesday were obliterated by retaking these tests and we never did get to see any results.

They give the ACT too in Florida but since it's based more on science and math I don't think I'll do nearly as good. The ACT also has a weird scale, like 36 is the highest score you can get?

You can take the ACTs and SATs in any state, some schools just put more of an emphasis on one over the other and you may have to travel further to one instead of the other. The SATs are the norm in my state, but I knew a few kids who took the ACTs because their guidance counselor recommended it. Which test you take also depends on what you want to major in and where you want to. Most high ranking schools consider the SATs to be the gold standard.

Is it Elementary School, High School, then university in the US?
Here, there're two years of Cegep before university.
It's also broken down this way:
Elementary: kindergarten + 6 years
High School: 5 years
Cegep: 2 years for pre-university, 3 years for a "technic" (not sure how to translate)
University: Well, it works like everywhere else.

In the US, it goes like this:
Preschool (optional, privatized, and not part of the main educational system)
Elementary School - Kindergarten through 4th grade (5 years)
Middle School - 5th and 6th grade (2 years)
Junior High - 7th and 8th grade (2 years)
High School - 9th grade through 12th grade (4 years)
College/University - As many years as you feel like, though a 4 year degree is most common
