Personally I'll pass on this simply on principle.

There are rumors that "Torchwood" will be coming to American TV, namely to the Fox network, sometime in the future. There are a great many things that could go wrong as well as right with this idea, as the Doctor Who movie Fox aired in 1996 can attest to. I think this import (remake? relaunch? co-series?) could run into a few rough patches:

- If they try to re-do the show, American style, they should just forget it and create a different show. This assumes the goal is to create a relaunched and reimagined "Torchwood." M'self, I think the best bet would be to make a branch of Torchwood located stateside. Friction with the U.S. government could be played up, seeing how well the U.S. gets on with international agencies, and crossovers with the Cardiff branch would be a nice occasional event. Also, if you were remaking the program, you'd have to come up with a replacement mythology that doesn't include a certain Time Lord, which would be a pretty big void to fill. I fear the result of such an effort would be another "Special Unit 2" or scripts with covers where "Men in Black IV" can still be seen under the white-out.

- I don't think a big enough American audience would react well to Captain Jack Harkness. The sci-fi crowd is generally a bit less reactionary to things like Jack's tendency to play the field, no matter what shape the field is in. But to stay on for more than one season, "Torchwood" needs to pull in more casual viewers. Plus, I'd fear that his sexuality would be played for laughs, resulting in a "Will & Grace in Space" effect, or they'd make him attracted to anything with latex bumps on its forehead.

- For some reason, 'wacky' sci-fi generally doesn't do well in America. And I might get taken to the nerd woodshed for saying this, but shows like "Torchwood," "Doctor Who," and "Farscape" are wacky. When the U.S. tries to do wacky sci-fi, we either do it unintentionally (see "Flash Gordon") or we really stink at it (see "Homeboys in Outer Space"). But these other productions are able to put a muppet in charge of a galactic space fleet and everyone else in the program takes them seriously, and it works. I have no idea what the magic formula is, but I dig it, for the most part.

- Red Dwarf. This show demonstrated how not to retool a show for a new audience. The less said about the attempt to export it to the USA, the better. And that promo vid came from their second crack at shooting a pilot, this time with Terry Farrel (aka Jadzia Dax from "Deep Space 9") as the Cat. I believe this is widely available at sci-fi convention bootleg video booths, and nowhere else, for obvious reasons.

And though I may be in just a pessimistic mood, I'm looking at "science fiction," "Fox," and "UK import" all in one item, and any two of those would usually spell doom for a series lasting more than half a season.

I think I can honestly say that Jack is too... well Jack even for Fox and personally I think the Christian Right would start losing their brains over the fact that just about everybody on the show is either gay, lesbian, bi, or like I said in the case of Jack, anything with a pulse.

An update courtesy of io9:

Fox Kills The Torchwood Revamp. Not Surprisingly.
When we heard that Russell T. Davies was working on a U.S. version of Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood for Fox, we were as doubtful as everyone else that Davies' brand of queer subversiveness would fly here. And we were right.

According to a statement from BBC Worldwide:
wrote:
BBC Worldwide Productions and the FOX Broadcasting Company have mutually agreed not to progress together with a 13-episode serialized 'Torchwood' format. We are currently in discussion with several interested networks.

The BBC's Jane Tranter insisted to the Hollywood Reporter that the U.S. Torchwood still isn't dead, and the show, which would reportedly still star John Barrowman as alien-fighter Captain Jack Harkness, is still making progress.

But you don't need to worry about the BBC trying to create a U.S. version of parent show Doctor Who. Says Tranter: "It may well be confusing to have a British Doctor and an American Doctor at the same time. There is only one Doctor, so I don't see that happening."
