Hey guys,

Do any of you play violin? I play guitar and bass guitar and am considering buying one though i don't plan to get a teacher and it seems that it may be a difficult instrument to learn by yourself. Does anyone have experience with it?

I've wanted a fiddle since I was in Junior High, but I've never had the money or gotten around to it. Good luck on it, though.

<Drew_Linky> Well, I've eaten vegetables all of once in my life.

When I was younger my elementary school offered to allow any student to play an instrument for free. They offered viola, violin, cello and that is it. My mom told me I had to pick one, so I chose the violin. I played it from 4th - 6th grade. I was never the worst, but I never really got into it.

As for the level of difficulty, I think if you play the guitar and bass, you'll be fine. Resin up that bow and have at it.

Not quite, I play cello, and I keep it in the standard tuning for classical pieces. though the cello, bass, and viola's standard tunings are all the same (CGDA) the violins being GDAE, I started playing it because of my high school music class, but then I bought my own. Instructional books work well for classical instruments, as there's not much inflection involved (no, bends, slides, legato, etc.), save for some vibrato on occasion, more advanced stuff maybe some time shifts or pizzing (pizzicato/finger plucking, no bow).it's easy enough, if you're looking to play classical pieces, it may be a bit more difficult.

I don't play the violin, but I DO play the cello. But at any rate, a string instrument (any of them) would be an excellent choice. Not enough people can appreciate the value of classical music, or even just modern music adapted to orchestra or symphony. It's like having a cheese grater rub your ear when you turn on the radio anymore.
