I spilled soda on the rug. What's the best way to get the stain out?

Throw your body onto the stain and roll around on the floor to soak in the soda to your clothing... Or maybe an ordinary cleaner like Fantastic or Lysol works.

Assuming you soaked it up immediately, pour some baking soda on it and then scrub with a damp towel.

Yeah, I soaked up as much as I could with paper towels last night. Also, it's diet soda, if that matters.

this works basically all the time.
if a stain is left, just get any stain remover. most work the same way.
or just drop random soda in different spots and call it a pattern

Ash is right about the baking soda. If the stain is still there (And assuming it hasn't sat for too long) my favorite stain remover is a 1-3 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Don't use this on something really expensive or delicate, but if you just have a normal run of the mill rug you'll be fine.
Club soda, if you have any around, works nicely too.

OR you could skin a dwarf and drop the hide over the stain.

I'd be able to help if you spilled pop on your rug, but soda is something I am unfamiliar with.

Everyone is familiar with soda! It's a national term!
In Massachusetts, we're supposed to call it "tonic", but only the elderliest of old-timers still do. And in Florida, of course, the local term is "fizzy lifting drink".

Soda? Never heard of it. That's like calling "Shit", "Poo".

I always thought "pop" was more of a 1950s slang for soda. It is around here anyway, only the old-timers still use that term around these parts. I can dig it though hep cat. Sha-ma-la-ma-ding-dong.
As far as the stain goes I agree with Josh, go for the Oxi-Clean. Billy Mays wasn't lying, that stuff works good. If you want to go the extra mile you can use a Sham Wow too, although I never bought one of those since Billy Mays wasn't selling them.

I bought some Triple Action Resolve on my way home from work. Gonna try that out. If the promises on the packaging are any indication, this stuff should be awesome.

I've only ever heard of pop being called soda when someone's trying to sound awkward on purpouse. Anyway, this came up in IRC a while ago, and Fernin popped me with this: http://www.popvssoda.com/countystats/total-county.html

What about tonic, goddammit?
Pop is a stupid name. And honestly, how often does pop/soda even come up? When you go to a restaurant and the waitress asks you what you want to drink, do you say "May I have a soda, please?"
Fuck no! You say, "Gimme a Coke, and make it quick or you're only getting a 10% tip, slut!"

That is interesting. Pop was used around here at one point, because as I said many elderly men and women still use it. No young person ever uses that around here though. I guess this is like the sub, hoagie, grinder, or hero argument.
One question, do people call all soda Coke in the deep south? I know Coke is more popular there, but it seems strange to call all sodas by one brand name. I have a lot of relatives in Georgia, but the county they live in is unknown on the map. I have to talk with one of my cousins down there. I am curious.

Up here we call all pop coke except in obvious situations. If you wanted to order a Pepsi specifically you'd ask for a Pepsi, and then if someone spilled it, you'd probably say "You spilled my coke!"

Well, I call all adhesive bandages Band-Aids and cotton-swabs Q-Tips. I guess there isn't much difference.
