Anyone here into Avantasia? I was on Alice Cooper's Wikipedia page a few weeks ago and it mentioned that he had done guest vocals on an Avantasia song "The Toy Master". So I had to get it. I loved it, so I got the whole album. Then I got all their other stuff. If you like symphonic metal, these guys are pretty damn cool. It's a side project of Tobias Sammet, who is apparently in a power metal band called Edguy. The albums feature a shitload of guest artists on tracks, most notably Kai Hansen, Michael Kiske, Alice Cooper, and Rudolph Schenker. Eric Singer did all the drumming on the last three albums.

I've never heard of them, and yet I love symphonic metal. Heading off to YouTube to give it a listen, then probably off to buy. Thanks for the tip!

Tracks I'd recommend in particular:

The Scarecrow
Sign of the Cross
Breaking Away
The Final Sacrifice
Chalice of Agony
The Toy Master

Although the stuff is (from what I'm told) a departure from Sammett's other band, there is still a very power metal feel to a lot of it.

Sign of the Cross isn't a cover of the Maiden song, is it?

Yup, I've got the Metal Opera and Scarecrow albums. Good stuff.....I agree that Cooper was perfect for the Toymaster song. He reminds me of a twisted Willy Wonka or something.

Edguy is pretty cool too......I've got their "Mandrake" album. If you like power metal it's a good pickup. I've been meaning to check out more of their stuff.

Hansen does vocals on four tracks: Inside, Sign of the Cross, The Seven Angels, Chalice of Agony
He played lead guitar on track: Shelter From The Rain

Michael Kiske does vocals on twelve tracks, including two that feature Hansen: Shelter From The Rain and The Seven Angels.

Also, Markus Grosskopf did all the bass on the first three albums.

I just listened to most of Scarecrow on YouTube...I really, really like it. Debating now if I want to order the CD, or just order it off iTunes.
