This is known as the sonic addendum. Release anything and the fans will buy it.

I kind of agree with you. 9 and 10 were fun throw backs but they can't keep doing that forever. If they're going to keep going with the classic series, they'll have to evolve eventually and it probably won't be pretty. The X series dead, Zero series is done, ZX may get another game but it'll probably be criticized if it's the same formula. They're kind of painted in a corner with Mega Man now. The classic gameplay of Mega Man just can't survive much longer as technology and tastes move forward.

They really just need to make a game that connects the classic series with the X series.

I'll say it again. That's exactly what 9 should have been.

The series will never be big as it was 20 years ago of course, but I'm pretty sure they can continue to produce a good old Mega Man-game once in a while to decent sales, because people like us on these boards love the classic Mega Man-style game, and they are so cheap to produce these days that I honestly believe that is enough.

If they came out with a new X game in HD for PS3 I would be all over that.

Even if you leave the gameplay alone, it just seems like Capcom wants us to focus on other series. There's no Mega Man for MvC3, Mega Man Legends 3 hasn't even been green-lit by Capcom, little in the way of MM games (excluding MM10 and MML3) in general lately, and not a single X game in years!

Yeah because Capcom Japan thinks the US hates these games.

Seeing as they don't listen to their American branch, I doubt a fan's opinion means much.

According to Capcom, they didn't like where development was headed, so they dropped it rather than try to salvage it. Perhaps they shouldn't have bothered.

Quote:
IGN: Why was Mega Man Universe cancelled? It seemed pretty far along in production.

Svensson: It was pretty far in production. I will say that we weren't pleased with where it was, collectively at Capcom as a product from a quality standpoint. We opted to say, "You know what, it's probably better that this not come out as opposed to it coming out and not necessarily giving the experience we want people to have." I know that's hard for fans to hear because they want to try it and want to play it, it doesn't matter what it is.

Beyond that, it was a very creative game. It was a very ambitious game for a Mega Man title in terms of what it was trying to accomplish with all the interchanging parts and a very large emphasis on user-created content. I think those are pillars that we want to see carried forward on other titles that we're doing.

Since I can't find the thread for it in the first three pages:
Quote:
IGN: I wanted to touch on Mega Man Legends 3. There was talk earlier that despite being announced it's not actually green lit for development. Can you clarify the status of this title?

Svensson: It's still not. It's green lit for prototype, it has not been green lit for production. The distinction is an important one in that the prototype green light allows the team to spec out what they're going to build and put together a prototype, a playable version of the game to show internally. In this case we're sharing the prototype publicly with everyone to collect feedback to then go back into the production cycle. Production would imply more headcount put against it and the other part is the full plan for what are we building the final product.

Part of that was supposed to be a collaborative effort between the development room and the fans in a very public, transparent display of what goes on behind the scenes. Part of that transparency is, and making clear to fans, is that we're not in production. The pins and needles feeling that the team has every day of, "Is this game ever going to come out?" is in some ways shared by the fans who've put their blood, sweat, and tears into this thing, too. It's an ambitious experiment in many ways and that community outreach and transparency is something I've been pushing more and more for years. When the team came forward with the approach they wanted to take with this title, I was extremely supportive of providing that level of visibility and input. It's listening to the market in ways that a lot of Japanese developers don't do.

The challenge with this of course is that you're opening the kimono very early on and sharing details on a game we hope comes to market. All of our games start this way. It's rare when something enters production that it doesn't come out at that point.

So MMU was cancelled because it'd be difficult to nickel-and-dime DLC with all that user content. Typical Capcom. Christ, it's like they're Japtivision, now.

It's not like they're the only ones who do that with DLC, you know.

How many franchises can that be said about, though? I feel like Castlevania and Final Fantasy were both getting pretty stale until recently. I've felt for a while now that Nintendo's been letting us down. It just seems to me like the newer franchises are doing all the interesting things while many of the old classics I loved are just trying to get back to the glory days.

As for the topic at hand, I thought that game looked kinda stupid anyway.

I'm guessing it was shot dead for the same reasons Universe was. They simply don't know how to make proper Mega Man games anymore and they would rather release nothing at all than risk insulting their fanbase with substandard followups.

They should just sell the rights to Mega Man to a company that gives a shit.

Or Inafune.
