^ Agree. The only thing I've really got going from Marvel right now is Captain America (Brubaker is fucking amazing), Amazing Spiderman (not incredible, but I love Spidy and the current arc looks to be pretty good) and Invincible Iron Man. Other than that, it's all DC.
Oh and Deadpool. But that's just because I enjoy the humor, not so much because the writing and stories have been anything special.
The current Spidey arc should be amazing cause it's Mark Waid writing it (The Unknown, Irredeemable...or, and a little thing called Kingdom Come). I REALLY recommend X-Factor, as it's been fantastic. Thor has been great as well, though the artist seems to be taking his sweet fucking time.

^ Oooh I don't know Mark Waid from Adam, but if you say he's that good, I'm excited!
X-Factor, I will look into for sure. Thor...meeeeh...as much as I'm a fan of world mythology, Thor never did much for me as a character. I might pick up an issue just to see what's what though, since you recommend it.

It's not. It's one of the most spectacular Marvel books to come out in recent years.
I really see a lot of Marvel hate in this thread, which isn't fair - DC and Marvel are on the same terms as companies. One isn't better then the other.
Here's some good stuff marvel side.
If you're looking for good Spidey, anything post-one more day after the writer switch is absolutely fantastic. It brings back a lot of stuff from the older books, and really ratifies that Peter Parker is a grown man now, and has actual responsibilities.
The current Daredevil run is absolutely amazing, watching the lead characters life absolutely spiral out of control in his self destructiveness is heart wrenching, but now it's starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Matt Murdock is one of the best written characters in comic books.
Anything in the NOIR series. It's an interesting take on the Marvel Universe, and it's got a lot of things going for it. I really like the take on Spider-Man, and the artwork is amazing. Kind of a 'what if marvel was a pulp comic' take, with a series edge.
also. 1602 is a fantastic series, with lots of nods to regular Marvel continuity, and interesting takes on regular characters. the 1602 nick fury is an amazing guy.
finally, Brother Voodoo. Seriously. buy it. Right now. periods.

i know. i was being facetious.
and even though batman is my fave superhero, i think i prefer the mythology in marvel comics over DC.
i also read 1602 and it was a good read. my only complaint, too many characters to deal with. is like they tried to cram all the popular super heroes into one comic and it feels as though it sometimes might lose some sort of focus. its still a good read.

As I recall, The Immortal Iron Fist is Ed Brubaker, so if you're loving his Captain America run you should love that as well. It was highly recommended to me, but I had already missed the first 16 issues or so at that point and didn't have time to catch up in trade form.

So I just discovered a rather interesting Anime show on Adult Swim called Bleach. It often comes on with Fullmetal Alchemist (which I quite like) which is how I discovered it. Anyone seen this and have any thoughts? I really have no idea what's going on in terms of plot since I came into it dead in the middle and have only seen a couple episodes, but I'm still enjoying it.

Bleach is a pretty good anime, though I think it is going on for too long (240 plus episodes, and it is still going), the filler is stupid, and it follows the basic Shonen structure. I catch it every now and then, but it isn't a favorite of mine.

^ Basically this. Good entertainment, but it's becoming the 21st century DBZ at this point. I ended up losing interest in the story already.
Fullmetal Alchemist though, is one of the best anime of this whole damn decade.

the first season of bleach was great, before all that soul society stuff. around the midpoint of the second season it begins to sink in that there are no serious consequences for any actions, and the show is only being continued for merchandise sales, by the third season when the talking stuffed animals that turn into people and the headphone wearing vampires are introduced, you'll probably stop watching it, much like I did.
Inuyasha did this too. It's very disappointing.

This isn't realy for n00bs, but I think all the comic people are reading this, so I wanted to let everyone know that if you're reading Blackest Night, READ GREEN LANTERN FIRST TODAY. I didn't get a chance to read anything yet, but my boss read Blackest Night first and was very emphatic that you should read GL first.
Also, Hawk, since I believe you mentioned you're reading the current Spidey arc by Mark Waid, so be sure to pick up Web of Spider-Man today as well. Amazing Spider-Man is part 2 in the Gauntlet storyline, and Web of Spider-Man is part 3. not sure why they came out in the same week, but just be sure to grab it as soon as you can cause I'm sure everyone's Web of Spider-Man numbers are much lower than their Amazing numbers.

^ Wtf? God that's annoying. The one thing I have yet to get used to with comics is the numbering/crossover continuations/etc. How do you guys keep all that straight???
Thanks for the tip though, Jeebus. I have a feeling my comic guy is good enough he'll probably pull both just because he knows I'm reading that arc, but if he doesn't I'll make sure to grab WoSM too.

I actually have all of the GL titles and the crossovers with BN now (thanks bonus check at work!) and have the rest in pulls. Honestly, though? I think it's fun to read them in pretty much any order, because then you wonder what the Hell they're talking about until you get to the issue where something else was referenced. It can be confusing occasionally, like, "How did the Black Lantern Corps rings go from 11.45% to 88% in one issue?" Not totally realistic, but it jumped pretty quick, thanks in part to BLs Azrael, Trigger Twins, Ventriloquist and King Snake in Gotham and BLs Lois Lane Earth 2, Kal-L and Psycho Pirate in Smallville.
Who likes role-playing games? Me. Way too goddamn much.

Fortunately, single story arcs rarely cross over titles. A big event like Blackest Night or Civil War will have crossovers and normally you can just read them whatever week they come out in whatever order, but I guess it matters this week. Only other time I recall it mattering was Civil War #2 which came out the same week Spidey revealed his identity, so it was better to read Spider-Man first.
As for the WoSM thing, normally they hype when something like this is happening. Dunno why they didn' this time. Messiah War went between X-Force and Cable, but it had some hype so you knew it was going to go between them before hand. There was no warning for this, not even to retailers as far as I know, and they just both appeared the same week. That is indeed very annoying.

Just read it, and Web of Spider-Man was NOT part 3 in the gauntlet storyline, I was misinformed. It's related backup stories, but not the main story so it's not necessary.

Jeebus, that's a warning for double posting.
( )
Ah well, I picked up WoS anyway. Its got the gauntlet logo and its about Electro (who I loved in ASM #612) so it was not a bad use of a couple bucks. If I like it enough, I'll keep an eye on WoS in the future to see if there are any other faux-crossovers with this storyline. (I don't like it enough to have it pulled I think, but I don't mind the extra additions to the current arc.)
100 Bullets sounds fucking amazing, and I will look into it as soon as humanly possible. Astro City is ordered, and Iron Fist is also on the short list of things to buy.
Also: Detective Comics #859 (the new Batwoman story) is my personal favorite comic of all time. I'm sure its not the "best," but on a personal level, hot DAMN was it fucking awesome. Kate Kane is so, so SO my hero, and I love her dad too.

Look For a comic called "Body Bags", it was a series made up of 4 issues, I think in 96', It was probably the most controversial series of the 90's (that was published by one of the bigger companies anyways, the company being Dark Horse)
Basically about a Hitman who is proficient with knives, to the point of it being a quasi superpower, who flubs on an assignment and is now being targeted, all while dealing with his runaway daughter who has come to live with him.
TL;DR One of the most F'ed up series from the 90's(that I can remember anyways). It came out around the time when I started looking more into the non DC/Marvel stuff. (It may be hard to find, and they did a reprint in B&W for a retarded sum a few years ago, so if you dont want to pay that, I have the issues on my PC, sure it isn't as cool as a physical copy, but it IS free)
As for anime...er Trigun is pretty sweet, the quintessential "Space Western"

I might end up listing things already said in this thread but whatever.
On the Marvel side of things
-Ultimate spider-man (first 100 issues are great, but then it gets worse from there on)
-Atonishing X-men, if you are a bit familiar with the X-men this is a great mini-series to read.
-Ultimates 1 and 2, the Ultimate version of the Avengers, both books are amazing but avoid the 3rd one!
-Ultimate fantastic four, havent read alot of it, but so far its great, theres a Marvel zombies crossover done well and features characters that don't have their own books (Namor for example)
-Marvel adventures, althrough mostly aimed at younger kids, they are all a great read and you don't need to know entire backstories just to read them
-Mini-marvels, same as Marvel adventures but more humour and jokes.
DC side of things
-Batman year one, great retelling of the Batman story which was also influenced in Batman begins movie
-Superman Birthright, another great retelling, but of Superman
-All-star superman, a super-man story that takes just about everything from superman history and creates a wonderful tale of it
-Bizzaro, a humour book starring Mr.Mxypylt and Bizzaro trying to stop a dimensional being from taking over the 5th dimension, alot of fun and you don't need to refer back to any stories.
-Sinestro corp wars, Great Green lantren book for first timers, a part two saga that preludes to a so mar going blackest night saga.

Going back to Transmetropolitan for a bit. Here's a fanmade scene I found last year, it's based on the fourth issue and while Spider's not bald... Well, it certainly doesn't bother you once he starts going.
