In my opinion, SNL really need to quit forcing it and get back to the basics of comedy. The last few times I have watched have been disappointing beyond all belief, granted it has it's moments, but I think the show is almost unrecognizable from the quality it displayed in the mid 90's and previous years. Maybe it's the cast, maybe it's the writers or a combination of both, but the result is a steaming pile that is leading the show to it's inevitable death.

I haven't watched SNL since Fallon was on Weekend Update. He and Tina Fey just killed that show for me, although Will Ferrell helped before that.

I have actually ben enjoying SNL. Are there skits that I don't find funny? Sure, but there are a bunch I find myself laughing at to make up for it. Keenan, Hader, Sidekis, and surprisingly Seth Meyers make me laugh quite a bit.

I was going to include him, but his involvement in sketches are hit and miss, but I usually always laugh at his Digital Shorts. I didn't laugh at his most recent one with Alicia Keys though.

I liked Will Ferrel when he was on SNL, the commercial parodies were hilarious.
Buy the SNL best of Commercial Parodies, it's totally worth the money.

Betty White should be hosting SNL soon. THere is a group on facebook, which I'm apart of, that want's Betty White to hos SNL. Many people think that she would start up SNL again, making it the funniest episode in years. Also, I only think the digital shorts are funny. Some skits have their moments...

I didn't want to create a new thread, but I actually watched an entire episode of SNL in close 12 years and wow...it was really really bad.
I usually will see about 2 minutes of it on TV, before I decide to flip the channel, but I was hanging out with my friend who is a big Jim Carrey fan and wanted to watch. Now the last time I remember Carrey hosting was back in about 1997, he might've hosted since then, but the 1997 episode was very very funny, so I decided to at least give this a chance. And while the cold opening about the New York mayor wasn't too bad, it went down hill very very quickly. A few things I noticed, almost every sketch didn't go beyond the five minute mark, and the ones that did were just infomercial parodies that dragged out every little thing because it had nothing else to work with. They also must have switch it up in the last several years because they had the band perform once before Weekend Update. Speaking of Update, I was almost relieved when I saw that they had back to a solo act. However, Meyers just basically read his lines in a very flat pattern and then went to a guest. He literally did 3 jokes, then to a guest, then 3 jokes, then another guest. I don't ever recall Update ever doing more than 2 guest spots, but it must show how weak the writing is, since they had at least 3 spots. Meyers couldn't have done more than 12 jokes, which is far below what I remember guys like Nealon, MacDonald or even Quinn doing. Wanna know how many real laughs this entire show got out of me? One. And it was a very cheap joke that got old every time they repeated it. The sketch was of this carnival ride that malfunctions and the singing robots constantly keep coming back on by themselves. Such a one note sketch barely made it to 4 minutes, if that. Jim fucking Carrey wasn't able to save this heap, and he's usually able to save almost anything.
Just thought I would rant a little, I was pretty upset at sitting through this entire show. I'll never ever make that mistake again.

I almost considered watching it after the game was over, but I figured that with Jim Carrey hosting and none of the cast being anyone I even know that it would be terrible. The commercial for it that kept running during the games was cringe worthy. I personally haven't even watched SNL on a regular basis since Chris Farley left the show. I've caught some of the stuff off and on but it has gotten really hard to watch over the years. I usually only watch when a band I like is going to be on anymore. My most recent favorite clip was the one of John Goodman doing the Liberty Mutual spoof and I think that was back in 2001 or 2002.

IMO, SNL never really consistently rolled out the funny. I remember a SNL season as one or two brilliantly funny skits in a sea of mediocrity. I don't really think that has changed at all.

I don't like to look at everything through rose colored glasses, but honestly from about 1991-1998, there were very few bad episodes. Not every sketch was amazing (I'm looking at anything with Julia "I was held back even though I suck" Sweeney) but I'd say the good outweighed the bad/ There was a hell of a lot of talent during those years and a lot of original things were happening.
And yes, Gilly sucks...Gilly sucks hard. The fact that they play up Kristen Wiig as the breakout star just shows you how little of a pool of talent they truly have.

Up until around 1995 the show had some great comedians on it, after then it only had Will Ferrell who is only funny about half the time. That lead to the skits actually being good there for a while because even the crappiest script could be made at least watchable by people like Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, etc. Now the talent pool is so terrible even good scripts can't make the show watchable.

I'm not watching anymore, with the exception of the rare times they have a good band on the show. It usually ends up muted while I wait for the band to come on anymore though because I have no idea who these people are but they are fucking painful to watch. SNL should go grab some of the people that are on Comedy Central Presents and get them on the cast instead of these hacks.
The last episode I watched was the U2 one last year, and everything but the music was dreadful. I would have watched the Eminem one this year but figured why bother when they will just bleep the hell out of it or make him not curse. If I'd known Tom Petty was on last year I'd have seen that one too but I only ever have NBC on for football so I rarely find out a good band is on unless it is during football season lol.

I doubt the ratings are as good as they used to be, but that's besides the point. Let's say they're doing miracle numbers right now, does that negate my opinion...no it doesn't. The show fucking sucks in my eyes...if you like it, good for you.
