Along with The Beatles, it would be the popular answer. While I think they were awesome, they still aren't in my top five. Hell, they may not even make my top ten.

If you don't consider the timeshare in which music is released, you can't appreciate its meaning.
These bands were the first to come with a new sound AND the sound was appreciated by large quantities of people.
Beatles - Rock
Led Zeppelin - Hard Rock
Nirvana - Alternative
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying any of them is the best in their genre. They are however the ones who more or less defined what the genre meant.

That's definitely true, but I think people just got sick of hearing Rolling Stone shoving The Beatles down their throat, metalheads saying Led Zeppelin invented heavy metal and you suck if you don't love them, or stoners trying to pick apart the lyrics to "Rape Me." I still think The Beatles were great musicians, and with Nirvana were very talented lyricists, but I do see how being told to think musically can get old very quickly.

Well you can't blame the Beatles for what Rolling Stone magazine does.

All I can say is that if you can come up with more #1 hits than the Beatles and can be recognized more than the Beatles, then you can talk shit. If anyone who doesn't match this criteria attacks the Beatles, then fuck them.

I think that the number of #1 songs is impressive, but irrelevant.
I agree with the prior argument that Rolling Stone has been shoving the Beatles down everyone's throats. It is true.
They were amazing and certainly deserve to be classified as such, but they aren't the only rock band, and there are many other rock bands that are also amazing.
I would argue that anyone with ears has the right to criticize any band they choose. Just expect that taste in music will be judged, because it always is.

Why because they have a few songs that fit into that Genre?
Would you call Guns N' Roses or Metallica country bands because they had a few country tunes?
As a band The Beatles they are mainly Rock, most specifically Popular Rock. This is the music they are most famous for.
P.S. "Psychadelic Rock" is spelled wrong. It is Psychedelic Rock.
