Well this thread got crazy really fast.
Also I liked how Vert capitalized white and black as though they were proper nouns and not adjectives. |
There is no agreement on whether to capitalize black and white when referring to races. I choose to. It's a style preference.

I don't know how old you are, Vert, or if it matters in the context of your story. If the guy was really bothering you, you could have asked your teacher if you could be excused, enabling you to confront the person who was irritating you and then you could simply say something like, "Could you please move somewhere else and hock up your phlegm? I am trying to focus in class and it is disturbing me." You could also have asked your teacher to do something if it was bothering you.
If you had gone out to confront the person in a civilized and polite manner and he was rude, then you can (and have every right, in my opinion) be rude as well and tell him to fuck off.
Even if the guy was hocking up phlegm on purpose he might not have been intentionally doing it to bother YOU.
Always be nice at first, then fuck someone up if you must. |
This line of thinking is something I always follow. This case was an exception.

I'm still waiting on someone to respond to something I wrote in the first post that's not the last sentence. Otherwise I may as well just name the thread "Vert1 versus Phlegm Master".

I'm gonna have to agree with everyone else here; a lot of what you've been saying is immature and petty.
Haven't you ever considered the possibility that maybe that guy had more than a coughing problem? That maybe he might've been too sick or weak to move somewhere else at that moment? Who are you to determine that he was being rude when you don't even know the guy or his whole situation? You say you're a polite person yet you have no qualms yelling at someone who could've very well been suffering. That doesn't sound like a polite person to me.
If it was really bothering you that much, it's a safe bet simply asking the guy if he could go to the bathroom would not have resulted in gunfire. A little bit of politeness can go a long way. The last part of your post pretty much said "I can't be an ass to someone because then I might get shot." While there is the unpredictable scenario that you might be dealing with a nutcase who'll shoot you regardless, you don't avoid being an ass to someone to avoid being shot at, you do it because it's simply wrong to do otherwise.
Supposing you were the one who was coughing and had a reason why you couldn't just get up and go (sick, weak, disoriented, etc.), would you have wanted someone to shout and scold you for being disruptive? Or would you have wanted someone to actually help you?
EDIT:

If I was being a disgusting human being who was disrupting an event that people paid lots of money for (i.e. college classes) I would hope someone would rudely confront me.
Man, I really wish I kicked that guy's ass now. Then he'd have some real health problems.

I do see where Vert is coming from on this issue since I hold the view that fat people should not be allowed in public places.

I don't really believe in karma, but I believe in idiosyncrasies. To me, baseball players not washing their uniforms during playoffs isn't a luck thing. They're comfortable in their uniform. It's what they're used to performing well in. I think how we exert ourselves socially can be similar. Poor hygiene and manners, for example, tell people that you can't see someone else's point of view as half-chewed food falls to your plate, or a room recoils from your B.O. People will either scold or avoid you. How you act leads to how you're treated.
On topic, if there's a situation where I'm angry, but I don't really have anything to say, I keep my mouth shut. If I end up saying something stupid and/or self-righteous that would only appeal to me, I look like an angry, self-absorbed dick. Since that's how people view me, that's how they'll treat me. It's an unnecessary step that only throws misery back at me, and the people who say they "don't care about what people think" are typically people I know to avoid. They lack awareness of themselves and their surroundings. They spread misery, but are confused when it comes back to them.
What if the coughing man had a respiratory illness, or some physiological deficiency? In that case, if you harass him, you are the asshole whether you like it or not. It's part of your thought process and will hardly be an isolated incident. On the flip side, this may have been a man unaware of his poor hygiene habits. Even if he deserves to be scolded, who the fuck am I to do it? Am I someone he'll listen to? If he doesn't, then what was the point about me being a person who feels it to be necessary to tell people what to do? In that situation, I'd check to just see if he's okay. If he says "yes" then it's none of my business and I let it be.

Old as in mid 40's to early 50s, not elderly old. He didn't have some dreadful incurable coughing condition as I saw him later walking around not being disgusting after that incident. He just decided for some reason to come upstairs with a cough one day and cause a ruckus.

You seem to be forgetting the fact that coughing is often a necessary reaction in the body. Just because he wasn't having problems later on doesn't mean he wasn't having problems then. Coughing can happen for any reason at any moment. Maybe it wasn't a respiratory illness, but he could've been choking on something lodged in his throat and managed to cough it out after a while and carried on afterward.
My basic point is, you can't judge someone so quickly when you don't know all the facts of their situation. You had no idea what was going on with that man at that moment except the fact he was coughing. There are a lot of factors behind it.

The thing about the people who "don't care about what people think" or are "proud of being an asshole," care more about what people think than anyone. They have this idea in their head that they'll be cool if they pound in this idea of them just being this cool guy who runs the world and is a total badass. Unfortunately, when you act and think like an insufferable asshole, that's what you are, whether you like it or not. There is no such thing as the cool asshole everyone looks up to. Eventually, after you give in to that crap, you just hang around a bunch of pricks who try to be the same way, and either end up lonely or at the throat of each other forever.
I'm not saying you have to please everyone, but self-indulgently treating annoyances like a chance to be a cool, angry douchebag. Because when something becomes a regular act, it's part of who you are, for better or worse.

I am pleased to see that the majority of the Syd Lexia crew are normal, well-adjusted people that I would have dinner and a drink with.
But if you chew with your mouth open so help me God I'm going to slit your throat.

Chewing with your mouth open is the worst thing in the world. As a Protestant, I don't believe in the distinction between mortal sins and venial sins, but if you chew with your mouth open, man should you be thinking about the state of your immortal soul.

If there's one table manners thing that drives me nuts it's people who can't keep food in their mouth. I hate watching rubes eat spaghetti by getting a huge gob, and biting down to let the rest fall to the plate.
Whoa, hey, I didn't bring my dad into this. You did.

I hate the entire human race. I hate how much they breed.

If I was going to kill someone who bullied me, they would have to attempt to do serious damage to either my mental or physical being.
Vert1 wrote:

I can always justify my own actions, others can make up their own reasons, or try to understand my reasoning, and that is as far as that goes.
Vert1 wrote:
How far can you push the human condition?
It depends on the person. Some people snap easily while others can take a lot, and some can even take abuse endlessly and be completely broken but unwilling to fight back.
Vert1 wrote:
If you severely made someone feel like shit and they pointed a gun at you one day wouldn't you think at that moment "well I guess had this coming" or "damn. maybe I shouldn't have fucked with this guy so much"?
That really depends on the situation. If I was acting like a civilized, decent human being, maybe I was doing something completely normal but said person is a complete nutcase and they have an issue with my normal behavior. In that case, I wouldn't think either of those two things.
Also, personally, if I was fucking with someone intentionally and pushed them to that limit, I would probably be such an asshole that I would still be doing it instead of taking time to regret or accept the consequences of my actions. I would probably be yelling "GO AHEAD ASSHOLE! I FUCKING DARE YOU TO SHOOT ME YOU DUMB FUCK!"
Also, I am not a bitch so if someone tried to shoot me I would totally try to fuck them up instead of going out like some whiny punk.
Vert1 wrote:
Even if you don't agree with revenge that leads to death what would be a bullying story that you could read or hear about that would make you say "fuck that bully"?
I don't really care enough to look up any stories to cite here, but pretty much any story about bullying can fit into that category for me.
Vert1 wrote:

You live in fear, then. Those who run most governments would have you exactly where they want you to be. Be a good sheep.

As far as how I feel about the other Races, I hate the fact that Elves are stuck with that Constitution penalty. It makes me glad that my own genetic superiority has landed me with a bonus feat.

In middle school, I was an easy target. Being overweight, having both glasses and braces, no problem admitting I liked geeky stuff; I was picked on a good bit. Finally in eighth grade (last year of middle school) I had had enough and after all the disrespect I'd received I screamed obscenities and threw a desk at one of my tormentors. Thankfully he didn't receive any life-threatening injuries and I was only suspended for a day (my excellent school record), but none of them messed with me again after that.

But you get bonuses to Dex (and Int too if this is Pathfinder), you belong in the rear where you don't risk getting hit.
