I probably would have liked III more had I not played V first. The job system was done so much better in that one. However I'd have to say out of the first 9 games, II is probably my least favorite.

I personally set the limit at the first 10.

Final Fantasy III is the worst game I've ever played. Like, I know I've played games that are not as well constructed, but no game was as painful to get through as this one. I hated pretty much every bit of it.

Jesus, LordHuffnPuff, I never realized there was such venom towards such a fast-paced RPG. I mean, I'm so fan of Secret Of Mana, but I might give that another chance.

FFII was an awful, broken excuse of a game.

Oh, there is. At least the originals. People bitch and moan about II and III not being ported over in the NES days but there's a good reason - they were not good games. Buggier than the first and not nearly as fun.

They weren't ported because FF1 didn't hit the US until 1990, and by 1991 the NES was in full decline due to competition from the Genesis, TG-16, and SNES. Look at DW3 and DW4. Great games, but commercially unsucessful in the US in part because of their release dates.

I don't care what anyone says, I like 3 better than 1. The gameplay features feel more refined IMO.

Yeah, I wasn't really clear...I didn't mean to imply that was the reason we didn't get the games (though I'm sure that was part of it). That's the reason people shouldn't bitch about it. An American FF II release woulda likely killed the series dead.

And I will admit III is a far more polished game than I. II is just a friggin mess, though.

I like to think that, had the first game come out in the west the same year as its Japanese debut, FFII would've gotten the same kind of attention as SMB2, Zelda II and Castlevania II.

Having never been a fan of turn-based RPG I have never played this one....until last week. I finally decided to give this one a go, and so far it's not too bad. I am still not a fan of turn-based RPG games, but this one isn't terrible. I have only made it as far a Fabul, and just picked up some ninja dude.

"you spoony bard!"

I will let people know after I get a bit farhter in to this one as to weather or not i like it, or will never pick up another FF game as long as I live.

The FFII you're playing is really FFIV. The series did not make that big of a leap in just two installments.

Yeah I know that the SNES version of the game is actually the 4th installment in the series. The original FF II and FF III were only released in Japan. Either way this is my first experience with any FF title. I decided it was time to give the game a fair shake. So far, I am not unhappy with the decision.

I've never even tried playing any of the NES FF games even though I've played all the other ones with the exception of the MMOs. Not really sure why I've never tried them, because I've played XIII and nothing could be worse than that one. Even its sequel, XIII-2, wasn't as dreadfully boring as it was which was a little surprising considering that it still used the same shitty combat mechanics. I have to imagine the NES games would be a refreshing change of pace from that.

Probably my favorite line from Final Fantasy IV Advance comes from someone in the developer room commenting about the retranslation:
"The Sand Ruby wasn't a ruby and the Twin Harp, as it were, was no harp at all. Turns out the bard really was spoony though - we checked!"

I actually really liked II in general. Especially the leveling system, which I know a lot of people loathe, but I like how unique it is and how you level up skills from using certain weapons a bunch and getting hurt by certain things.

I found that there was no consistency do it. The system makes the early game painfully difficult, and I found my party getting crushed like beer cans constantly. Then, when the right spells/equipment were found, they could be spammed like crazy, turning my party into demigods. Neither was fun.

To increase your HP you gotta make everyone on your party hurt themselves. (Or at least reduce their HP until the HP counter turns red/their sprite starts crouching)

Self-mutilation 4LYFE

I guess the leveling up system is kind of broken. I remember the first time I went through the game I made my characters hurt themselves so much that they all had over 4000 HP before I reached the third town.

Doing a quick bump of this topic because I started a new game on FFII a few days ago. I'd like to say that it's not nearly as fun as I remember it. Yeah, the level-up system is kind of neat and unique, but it takes freaking forever to level up spells and weapon proficiency. I guess I liked it more when I was younger and had time to spend two or three hours levelling up one friggin' spell.

It only takes six minutes to do that per level, thanks to a glitch.

You mean the cursor glitch? While it might be true that it only takes 6-10 minutes to do that per level and per person, maxing out the spell for three characters takes hours at a time. Which, people can say that you "don't have to" max out a spell, but when I'm casting a Fire spell on an enemy weak against fire at the sixth or seventh level of the spell and it's only doing 80 or so damage, I might as well max out the whole thing or else it's useless.

This.

Exactly why it's my least favorite.

I'm unfamiliar with the glitch you speak of.
