^ In fairness, as I understand it, the names were changed BACK to the un-Anglacized versions the creators originally intended. I may be remembering that wrong though.

Maybe, but I like the charm that the original names were. Probably just because it's what I remember as a kid. They seemed so awesomely generic, if that makes sense.

I have to say I have really enjoyed watching this playing of Dragon Warrior. It is interesting to watch someone with no knowledge of the game figuring things out. It is also strangely relaxing.

It's possible. They only allotted 7 characters for enemy names and 4 characters for spell names. And you get more bang for your buck with limited character space in Japan. But I prefer the American names for most stuff, especially spells. Cure/Cure 2/Cure 3 is much better than the Cure/Cura/Curaga maggotry we have now.
I prefer the American names for stuff in Dragon Quest as well. Erdrick was a much cooler name than Loto/Roto. I also prefer Babble to Liquid Slime and Healer to Heal Slime.

I'd like to see this guy do a blind YOLO run of the Final Fantasy II on the NES, with the fan translation. I bet once he finished wandering around the castle it would last about 3 minutes.

I've been impressed with how far he pushes his luck in this, considering the fact that if he dies it's all over.

Yeah. I thought for sure it was going to be Game Over the first time he encountered a Drakee, but he had the presence of mind to run.

This thread inspired me to play through Dragon Warrior again. I just finished a few days of intense grinding to max out at level 30, now I am ready to collect the items I need and kick the Dragonlord's ass.

So does "run" always work?

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure "But the way was blocked!" comes up sometimes and your success rate is tied to your agility and the enemy's level, but maybe that was later games. I think it's impossible to run from the Dragonlord, and maybe the Cantlin Golem.

Episode 7 is up if anyone else is still watching this run. I know I am, and I am very much enjoying it.
I may explore the concept of only playing games on one life myself at some point when I finally get back to making videos.

You should call your version One Life To Live and use the 80s theme to the soap opera.

On the TAS Dragon Warrior run, does he just get extremely lucky on those Metal Slimes, is he cheating, or there some sort of exploit where being unarmed makes you always hit?

It's all luck manipulation, he guarantees a critical every time through brute force or maybe some kind of LUA script.

You ARE????
No but seriously, it's a fucking TAS, what'd you expect? They're gonna fuck with the game to the absolute extreme to guarantee the quickest possible ending, no matter how boring and stupid it is to watch.

Well, there's the famous SMB3 TAS where everything he does is physically possibly, but the non-gameplay segments are sped up.

On that DW TAS it says at around the 30 second mark that the re-record count is 1614. Which means that there were a lot of save states being made and then reloaded to pull off the appearance of not being randomly attacked, always getting criticals in battle and getting the encounters to be killed when he needed them.
Which makes the run completely unrealistic.

Yeah when I watched it I was thinking, "God damn does that game have no random encounters at all?" I've never played it, so I had no idea, and I didn't notice it when it said that.

and also notice how he doesnt have any random encounters except when he wants to get exp or gold. or when he wants to die to start at the castle again.

Wow that's a shockingly low amount of re-records. That amount of re-records actually indicates the opposite of what you said about a lot of save states; if anything a re-record count that low indicates not very many were needed. A re-record is counted any time a bad outcome is randomly generated and needs to be dice-rolled again. Think about the number of movement tiles he walked over during this run, it had to he in the thousands, at least high hundreds nearing one thousand, and just think about the potential for encounters. So how the hell did he manage so few re-records? Some games have six digit re-records or more.
He's probably got a way to predict what the random number generator will output or something.
